Art and fashion have always been connected in portraiture and on the runway. Celebrate the merging of both at OMA September’s Taste of Art. Warm up by drawing models wearing unique couture and plan your own fashion/costume with many media and materials including drawing, painting, fabric and collage. This could be the beginning of your creation for OMA’s ART AFTER DARK costume contest in October. Enjoy drinks and appetizers along with fashion images for inspiration before starting your creative process.

What is Taste of Art? Kick off your weekend with a bite-sized happy hour version of our renowned Studio Arts workshops. Gather with friends in an artistic space designed to amplify your creative side. Join arts educator Robin Douglas, as we dip our toes into the work of celebrated artists over drinks and nibbles, followed by a rapid demonstration of their styles. You’ll then be guided to interpret these artists and create your own singular, spectacular work of art. We’ll help you express your unique style and ensure you have a blast doing it. All levels of experience are encouraged to participate. OMA provides food, drinks, and supplies; all you have to do is get yourself out of work, grab your friends, and have fun!

Sculptors, painters, photographers, and artists of all disciplines are welcome. Join the conversation from a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Scenes from the glowing nights in Arles, Paris, and London will be our subject matter similar to these famous artists. Thick paint, and high contrast, with white and gold highlights, will be included in these compositions. Join Robin Douglas with all art materials included with light snacks.

Join us every other month for Studio Arts, when OMA transforms into an artist’s studio, offering skill-building workshops led by distinguished professor and arts educator Robin Douglas. Inspired by world-renowned artists, and practicing artists with exhibitions at OMA, you will explore different media, techniques, and subjects found in an artist’s studio. This full-day workshop held from 10:00am-3:00pm is meant to get you in the art-making groove and develop new approaches to seeing and creating artwork. Whether you have a lifetime practice or are new to expressing yourself, we exchange ideas and techniques in a supportive and challenging environment. Students of all levels are welcome to stretch their creative muscles and build community with us. All supplies and light refreshments for each workshop are included in the cost. A break for lunch and a relaxed discussion will occur at midday. Please bring your own bagged lunch or feel free to visit one of the restaurants close by on our provided list.

Off The Wall is a conversation series that brings together community leaders, artists, and curators to engage in discussions about current affairs affecting the creative health and well-being of our region, both now and in the future. In this series, we explore the museum's role in uniting art and community to champion culture. Part moderated conversation, part audience participation, every discussion aims to bring art off the walls and into our daily lives. Featuring the lead curator of Transformative Currents Cassandra Coblentz, exhibition artist Fran Siegel, LA Times environmental reporter Rossana Xia, and OMA’s Director of Exhibitions and Collections Katie Dolgov, the focus of this round-table discussion will be on the impact of sea level rise on Southern California’s art community and how science and art can bring awareness and enact change.

In “What is the Color of Love” Richard Mayhew has a sense of color like no other artist. People feel color and in this studio, we will complete a series of color theory exercises before completing our own unique painting to invoke emotion. Cut and paste, arrange, and reassemble discarded paintings into grid-like compositions to create precious and almost readable images. Bring in any artwork that should be revitalized in this studio. Join Robin Douglas who will provide extra paintings to manipulate, backgrounds, and glue. Light snacks will also be provided.

Using gold paint to enhance our compositions of people and places we will use Klimt’s style of glittering color and intermittent geometric shapes. Some 3-D mosaics will be available for a more tactile illusion.
