Snowy Day & Smoky Night

SNOWY DAY & SMOKY NIGHT

November 17, 2001–January 6, 2002

Curated by Teresa Ellis

OMA presents the award winning work of two children's book illustrators, Ezra Jack Keats and David Diaz. This two-part exhibit comes from the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature in Abilene, Texas.

Diaz, an illustrator who began his career with The San Diego Reader, has illustrated numerous children's books. The bold and graphic illustrations for his first book, Smoky Night by Eve Bunting, earned a Caldecott Medal in 1995. Keats, an icon of children's literature, authored and/or illustrated more than 85 books in his lifetime. His Caldecott book, Snowy Day was considered groundbreaking, both for his use of collage and his portrayal of the urban experiences of children of color.

Snowy Day & Smoky Night curator Teresa Ellis has organized a variety of special programs to accompany this exhibit. On December 1, the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators will present a Panel Discussion and Book Sale at the museum. Also, the Oceanside Public Library-Civic Center will host a Children's Collage Workshop and a Bookmaking Workshop will be held at the Oceanside Public Library-Civic Center.
