This is an extension of Changing Terrain: Regional Artists Interpret Our Landscape, a collaborative exhibition on view at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) August 22, 2026–January 27, 2027 and San Diego History Center (SDHC) August 22, 2026–January 31, 2027. Works at OMA and SDHC were selected by a Curatorial Advisory Committee: Johnny Bear Contreras (sculptor and Kumeyaay public artist), Gabriel Boils Teran (visual artist and cultural agent), Katie Dolgov (Director of Exhibitions and Collections at OMA), and Tina Zarpour (Vice President of Community Engagement, Education & Collections at SDHC)

Inspired by the 2013 exhibition Nature Improved: San Diego Artists Interpret Our Landscape, Changing Terrain brings together contemporary artists from Southern California to explore a region in constant transformation. Revisiting the evolving field of landscape art more than a decade later, the exhibition features artists who participated in the original Nature Improved exhibition alongside exceptional works selected through a regional open call. As curatorial advisor Gabriel Boils Terán explains, "The appreciation of landscape is a commonly shared human experience. However, its specific characteristics vary for each person and are determined by where they live, their personal history, and the culture collectively shared in a particular place."

Changing Terrain offers fresh perspectives on landscape, revealing how environment, culture, history, and community shape our evolving sense of place. Together, these works capture the beauty, complexity, and resilience of a border region where natural and human histories continually intersect.
