Julia San Román: The Infinite Hope

JULIA SAN ROMÁN: THE INFINITE HOPE

October 21, 2017–March 18, 2018

Julia San Román emigrated from Madrid to pursue scientific research in the U.S., but never gave up her obsession with painting and art history. These influences can be seen in the Glimmer series, with the contrast of rigid, polychromatic lines against the organic softness of supple Baroque clouds. Or in the Cante Jondo series, where the abrupt, staccato rhythm of gestural bird shapes over dark and indistinct clouds represent the sounds of Flamenco hand clapping. “The mystical consciousness, so fundamental for the work of an artist, is like a suffering of reality, a state of constant hypersensitivity to everything...good or bad, light and darkness.”
