Each 5"x 5" work of art is $25, plus processing fee and sales tax, and 100% of the proceeds support OMA’s education initiatives that provide thousands of students annually with transformative arts-based experiences.

“Triptychs with Diverse Harmony"

In this workshop, create 3 paintings that are related yet different and complement each other with a flow of creativity. Themes like metamorphosis, changing seasons, and varied viewpoints along with a dynamic force will be emphasized.

All materials included, and drinks and light snacks will be provided as well.

Join us to raise a toast and meet the artist on February 14 for a truly out-of-this-world experience at the celebration of a stunning, newly-completed painting by renowned artist Robert Xavier Burden. This giant masterpiece, featuring hundreds of aliens from pop culture through the decades, will transport you to a cosmic realm like never before. Celebrate Valentine's Day with a unique date-night alternative, as the artist himself will be on hand for an exclusive meet-and-greet. Don’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in an unforgettable evening of art, culture, and intergalactic intrigue!

This program is free with Museum Admission.

The museum is open until 8:00pm, guests are welcome to stay until the museum closes.

Remarks will be at 6:45pm.

This year's Black History Month program at Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) will celebrate and explore the untold stories of Black artists who have contributed significantly to mainstream culture, particularly in animation, film, theater, and music.

Our three featured speakers represent three different generations and have all experienced the reality of being the “only one” in their careers, navigating moments that forced them to become racially aware. Through this multi-genre exploration, we hope you’ll gain a deeper insight into the power of storytelling and the importance of representation in the arts.

North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA), Oceanside Public Library (OPL), and OMA are proud to partner on the presentation of this community discussion.

Featured Artists & Speakers:

-Marshall Toomey: An animator, artist, and author, Marshall will share insights from his upcoming book and reflect on his journey in the animation industry and elsewhere. He will also read a short excerpt from his unpublished work, offering attendees a unique glimpse into his experiences. Marshall is currently an exhibiting artist at OMA.

-Laura Williams: Voice actor from The Lion King, a piano prodigy, and daughter of O’side community-renowned Arts Commissioner Karen Williams Graham. Laura will perform a song from The Lion King, sharing her experience as the voice of young Nala and the impact it has had on her and her family’s lives.

-Kevin “Blax” Burroughs: As the Artistic Director of Oceanside Theatre Company, Kevin "Blax" Burroughs is an award-winning multi-hyphenate theater artist with expertise in directing, choreography, lighting design, and performance. As the youngest artistic director of a professional theater in San Diego County, Kevin has worked with notable companies such as Moonlight Stage Productions, Cygnet Theatre, New Village Arts, and San Diego Musical Theatre. He will also graciously perform a song live.

-Elaine Swann, Moderator: One of the nation’s most recognized lifestyle and etiquette experts, Elaine is the founder of The Swann School of Protocol, an institution dedicated to enriching lives through etiquette and social courtesies. She is a sought-after keynote speaker, corporate etiquette trainer, and author of Let Crazy Be Crazy. Elaine will lead this engaging and thought-provoking discussion.

“The Spark of No Control Leads to Creativity”

French filmmaker Cocteau used this saying to create Avant Garde movies. We will follow that motto to create gestural, spontaneous works of art in all sizes. Color, lines, shapes, and texture will be the art elements used in loose abstraction.

‘’The Jackson Pollock of the 21st Century”

Mark Bradford and his multi-layered collage media and paint on canvases will inspire this studio. A mix of layered papers, collage and canvas will build up these tactile works of art. The possibilities are endless. All materials included. Drinks and light snacks provided.

This in-depth, professional, and constructive critique will examine 10 artworks by mid-career, full time artists. The artists and artworks one artwork per artist will be selected for the critique by jurors G James Daichendt, L Croskey, and a third juror TBC, who will also run the in-person session. Art lovers and artists curious about the process of a professional critique are encouraged to attend the session for free as observers. The critique will be followed by a moderated audience Q&A session. Register as an audience member here[link to event listing]. We strongly encourage any/all artists who would normally attend the quarterly to join this one as well! About Artist Alliance

OMA's Artist Alliance serves as an affiliated membership group accessible to OMA members at any tier for an extra annual fee of $20 per person. This alliance fosters interaction, visibility, and professional growth for artists within the region. OMA holds a number of events that either feature Artist Alliance members’ artwork (both on-and-off-site exhibitions), are exclusive to Artist Alliance members (i.e. Artist Alliance Biennial), or offer free or discounted admission. “Flora and Floral”

Inspired by Contemporary British artist Flora Yukhonovich and her Rococo creative impulse paintings, this studio will have a joyful, colorful abstract emphasis with hints of subject matter. There is an intersection between representation and abstraction. Choose your favorite painting to abstract, enhance, and transform. All materials included. Drinks and light snacks provided.

“Multiple Energetic Drawing and Painting Techniques”

Spend this studio exploring wet and dry media exercises with pen, ink, charcoal, markers, and watercolors on a variety of surfaces. There will be many still-life and model options to inspire. Create final imagery utilizing your experimental drawings and paintings.
