Taste of Art: California Through Monet’s Eyes
Picture a vivid image of Southern California translated onto canvas by Claude Monet. Having spent a good deal of time in the south of France, his ability to create serene coastal landscapes would have been the perfect fit for painting Oceanside in all its natural beauty. In anticipation of OMA’s upcoming Plein Air Festival, join Robin Douglas for a short presentation focused on this legendary painter and be inspired to create your own masterpiece using vital brushstrokes with soft colors to capture our rich surroundings. All supplies for your original artwork will be provided.

Two-Day Workshop: The Joy Of Nature
MONDAY & WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7 AND 9
Drawing inspiration from three master painters of nature, Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, and David Hockney, join Robin Douglas to explore their distinct styles and shared love for outdoor scenery and majestic landscapes. Be inspired by Van Gogh’s rich, thick repetitive brushstrokes, O’Keeffe’s smooth, organic transitions, and Hockney’s playful colors and shapes to create your own unique painting. In anticipation of OMA’s upcoming Plein Air Festival, celebrate the joy of nature with a splash of creativity! All supplies for your original artwork will be provided.

Artist Alliance Quarterly Exchange
Artist Alliance is taking the quarterly critique online. Viewing is open to both members and visitors, but sharing artwork is limited to Artist Alliance and Cultural Cohort members only.
Artist Alliance members will need to snap a photo of current work and submit it ahead of time to share with the group during the Quarterly Exchange.
Send a copy of the image prior to the event by following these simple steps:
1. Make sure your image is a jpeg file and is sized to at least 1920 pixels on the longest side (just like we usually do for Online Juried Shows).
2. Save and name your file as“Quarterly artwork_[YOUR NAME]”
3. Email your image to Larry Vogel at lavogelart@gmail.com with the subject line“OMA Quarterly Critique: [YOUR NAME]”

In connection with OMA’s upcoming Plein Air Festival on July 24-31, this no-pressure, group-based painting session will provide the necessary know-how to create your own work of art in the open air. Learn about outdoor painting techniques, recommended art supplies, and a few insider tips to getting the best out of your plein air experience.
Members $10, Visitors $15

SmallTalk: Art As A Community-Based Practice
Join OMA’s hotel special projects director, co-curator, and visual artist Rebecca Webb for an insightful conversation with San Diego-based artists Jennifer Luce, Michelle Montjoy, and Akiko Surai about the role art plays in activating communal spaces and community engagement. Learn about the artwork by each of these artists that will be featured in two newly-opened Oceanside beachfront hotels, The Seabird Resort and Mission Pacific Hotel, as well as the community-driven curation process for both sites. Through this discussion, we will explore their creative processes, unique contributions as artists, and common vision for art as a tool to bring us together in a shared environment.

Taste of Art: Outsider Art
In association with OMA’s new exhibition Color of Sound, celebrate the artistic spirit of creators who exist outside the mainstream art world, rewriting societal norms and definitions. Explore the methods of artists on the autism spectrum and others who are neurodivergent, taking a closer look at their intrinsic abilities and honest vision to make expressive works of art. Join Robin Douglas for a brief lecture followed by a hands-on workshop where you can draw and paint in free-thinking, intuitive and energetic techniques embodied by the Outsider Art world.

Be inspired by newly installed indoor and outdoor sculpture on display at OMA to create your own 3-D work of art! Join Robin Douglas for a hands-on exploration of a variety of methods and materials, highlighting the diverse approaches of several artists including Faith Ringold’s soft sculpture, Marisol Escobar’s segmented objects, and Louise Nevelson’s geometric abstract architectural forms. All supplies for your original artwork will be provided, but feel free to bring in additional materials or found objects you wish to work with as well.

SmallTalk: The Color Of Sound
Celebrate Autism Awareness Month! Join Debra Muzikar and Keri Bowers, co-founders of the nonprofit The Art of Autism, for a lively and informative discussion celebrating neurodiversity in the arts and the creative abilities of artists on the autism spectrum. In association with OMA’s new exhibition Color of Sound, meet Joel Anderson, Sydney Edmond, Austin John Jones, Jeremy Sicile-Kira, and Syance Wilson, artists who capture their multi-sensory experiences of the world through their artistic creations. Discover their stories and unique processes before fully immersing yourself in a world of color and sound during your next visit to the museum. Color of Sound will be on view at OMA April 17–July 11, 2021.

Behind The Exhibition: Twenty Women Artists: NOW
Join curator Alessandra Moctezuma and artist Julia C R Gray for a virtual discussion covering the inspiring origin story and powerful artwork featured in Twenty Women Artists: NOW. Hosted by OMA’s exhibition manager and registrar Katie Dolgov, this program will explore the unique ways artists can come together in times of great social change to capture the moment and to provide a way forward. Learn about the artists’ approaches as individuals as well as the strong sense of community and support forged around the group, resulting in a profound and timely collection of artwork that explores the many challenging conditions women face today.
