Emily St. John Mandel Discussion And Book Signing

As part of the Big Read, the audience at this event at Star Theatre will be transported into Mandel’s novel Station Eleven as she discusses the end of the world, the history of pandemics, and the impact of the plague on Shakespeare’s life and work. Panel Discussion: Station Eleven, Reimagining Our Future

As part of the Big Read, MiraCosta College will host a moderated panel discussion in their Little Theatre featuring professors in letters, sociology, and physics to examine the themes of Station Eleven in the context of their disciplines and discuss the preservation and future of our culture and environment.

Exhibition Reception And Big Read Kickoff

Sip, nosh, and mingle with artists and fellow art lovers as OMA celebrates the Big Read in partnership with Oceanside Public Library with the opening of Artifacts, Survival is Insufficient, and The Museum of Civilization. All three exhibitions are based on themes in the novel Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. This event is free for all to attend.

Two-Day Workshop: Painting And Printmaking Of Warhol

Explore the painting and printmaking techniques of Pop Artist  Andy Warhol. From mono printing, photo tinting, photo overpainting, and multiple edition printmaking, unique imagery reflecting contemporary art will be made in this two-day workshop with Robin Douglas. Bring in current event photos or other imagery to enhance and augment. Most other materials will be supplied.

Two-Day Workshop: Golden World Of Gustav Klimt

Klimt was responsible for the Art Nouveau movement and painted the beautiful women and lush countryside of Vienna. Learn his motivations, use his techniques and colorful, glittering palette in this workshop with Robin Douglas to create your own sensuous, luminous painting. Two-Day Workshop: Assemblage And Collage

Louise Nevelson’s sculpture, art, and genius will be the inspiration for this two-day workshop. Join Robin Douglas to create a maquette that could lead to a larger finished work of art using Nevelson’s techniques. Be inspired to create art “in the round” with varying heights and depths. All supplies provided.

Two-Day Workshop: Colorful Images And Text Of Laura Owens

Using contemporary Los Angeles artist Laura Owens as an inspiration, Robin Douglas will show how to use image, text, pattern, and actual textures to produce unique, attractive yet provocative artwork. Experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to create a creative composition. Most materials will be provided but bring in any that will augment your work.

Two-Day Workshop: Watercolor Inside And Out

Water-based paint has been used for hundreds of years to create luminous, mysterious, and colorful realistic and abstract images. Using a variety of techniques and found natural objects as inspiration Robin Douglas will show how to create exploding compositions of what is rarely seen. Bring in your favorite watercolor brushes and paints or use the studio supplies. Different papers will be provided.
