Workshop: Ancient Calligraphy

Taking inspiration from Joyce Cutler-Shaw’s Alphabet of Bones, instructor Heather Peters will explore creating letterforms and large-format calligraphy. Participants will experiment with brushwork, pigment inks, and wood writing tools similar to those used to create ancient writing forms. All supplies provided. Online registration is closed. Life Drawing

Artists will work from a combination of 5 to 40 minute poses during this non-instructed session. Live model, table, and chairs are provided. Artists to bring their own drawing materials. Price is $12 for members, $15 for visitors, payable in cash at the door.

Artist Alliance Reception At Brooks Theatre

Join the Oceanside Theatre Company (OTC) and OMA to recognize the collaborative exhibition Through the Artist’s Eye—RED, featuring works by OMA Art Artist Alliance members. The exhibition provides the visual art for the OTC’s theatrical production of  RED, a drama about the artist Mark Rothko that runs through May 20, 2018.

This private champagne reception with live music of Mozart will begin at 6:00pm with a performance of RED following at 7:30pm. OMA members are invited to attend the reception, the play, or both events. Plus, stay after the performance for a short talkback with the artists.

An RSVP is required to attend the reception—email attendee(s) name(s) and the number of people attending to info@oceansidetheatre.org with Art Reception in the subject line.

First Friday Art Walk: Pajama Night At OMA

Come in PJs and cozy up with children’s stories, art projects, classical lullabies by the student-run string ensemble Triton Trio, and a delicious hot cocoa bar—plus explore the exhibitions for free.

Best-selling author Janell Cannon will do a special reading of the25th-anniversary edition of her book Stellaluna as well as Trupp and Little Yau.

Schedule Of Events:

  • 5:00–8:00pm: Art projects inspired by Janell Cannon’s stories in the lobby and on the terrace
  • 5:00–8:00pm: Hot cocoa bar on the terrace
  • 6:00pm: Author Janell Cannon will read Stellaluna, Trupp, and Little Yau in the second-floor gallery
  • 6:45pm: Book signing by Janell Cannon in the lobby

Before I Die, a city-wide participatory public art project led by the Oceanside Public Library launches in downtown Oceanside during Art Walk at various locations, including the terrace at OMA. All ages are encouraged to remember what really matters in an age of increasing distraction and flux and share their personal aspirations on these walls.

Pajama Night is in partnership with Oceanside Promise and Oceanside Public Library, and supported by Paul and Pam Kelly.

Join instructor Heidi Borsch for a one-hour, all levels yoga class in one of the museum galleries. After an inspiring session with art and yoga, participants will enjoy an acai bowl on the terrace. Proceeds support busses for onsite elementary school field trips to OMA.

Exhibition Reception

Sip, nosh, and mingle with artists and fellow art lovers as OMA celebrates the opening of four exhibitions as part of the Visual Narrative series with artists Janell Cannon, David Fokos, Sherry Karver, and Joyce Cutler Shaw. Members at the President’s Circle and above are invited at 5:00pm for the VIP hour. Online ticketing is closed. OMA members may just show ID at check-in. Visitors may pay at the door.
