“I love the constant challenges of painting on location as it forces me to pare down grand vistas or detailed scenes to the bare essentials. It is a delicate balance to provide just enough so that the painting is understood by the viewer, while leaving suggested features to the imagination. I strive to be efficient with brushstrokes yet still capture my feelings about the location. I love this question, not because I have the perfect place though. For me, painting on location is all about the light. I am equally struck by the late afternoon light at a tide pool as the long shadows cutting across a gritty alley. That said, I absolutely love setting up my easel in early Spring here in Southern California, when the people discover what the minus tides reveal at the tide pools.” –Artist Liz Abeyta
