Duke Windsor: Nothing’s Impossible

duke windsor: nothing's impossible

november 20, 2021–march 13, 2022

Food and art have a long and prosperous relationship, with masterpieces created since the dawn of art providing contemporary audiences a peak into culinary lifestyles of the past. Inspired by traditional Dutch still lifes and skillfully rendered using time honored traditional painting techniques, Windsor's Burger Series presents modern culinary choices in a literal visual feast. The sumptuous artworks beg the question, can the viewer taste and smell with their eyes? Can a simple selection of paint be applied to the canvas to incite the desire for more?

On his pursuit to paint the quintessential American icon, Windsor says, "I was inspired to utilize gold leaf after seeing the biopic film Klimt, particularly one of the scenes in which Klimt (played by John Malkovich) is applying gold leaf on what would become his famous Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Later, while visiting the Timken Museum in Downtown San Diego's Balboa Park, I viewed the collection of Russian icons on wood panels. The reverence and visceral experience I felt from the luminance of these traditional icon works inspired me to recreate this feeling in my work. Although I continue to develop gilding techniques, I often refer back to these works for inspiration. Unfortunately, in the art world, gilding techniques are often considered merely decorative art.
