Plein Air Paint Out At Historic Cafe 101

Artist Alliance members, bring all your usual outdoor painting gear and join us for a vibrant and dynamic paint out at the historic diner, 101 Cafe in Oceanside. Come and meet our newest Paint Out Volunteer, Andrew Johnson (pictured above), on Sunday, September 3, at 9:00am to check in. Afterwards, you will be on your own to explore the area and select your favorite scene to paint. Please Note: This is a non-instructional event.





Whether you’re a first-time painter or a seasoned pro, this event welcomes artists of every skill level. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn, create, and connect with fellow plein air painters. Immerse yourself in the charming nostalgia of the 101 Cafe, a cherished Oceanside landmark that provides the perfect backdrop for your creative endeavors.





Event Bonus: When you are finished painting, bring your painting to OMA and share it with the group gathered for the Artist Alliance-hosted event, Coffee and Conversation. The event is FREE and runs from 12:00-2:00pm. This is a great opportunity for networking and showing off your artwork to the art community!

Off The Wall: Connie Jenkins | Virtual Series

Connie Jenkins is an accomplished Realist painter known for her large-scale canvases depicting the natural landscape. Her artwork explores the interplay between yin and yang forces and captures the cyclical nature of time, mirroring the human life cycle. Jenkins holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from the University of Colorado at Boulder. With over 25 years of teaching experience, she has shared her expertise in drawing, painting, and design at various colleges and universities in Southern California. Join us as we explore specific artworks by Jenkins, examining their deeper meanings and the stories they tell.

Geoff Allen: “Painting Trees in Watercolor” Workshop | Oceanside Plein Air Festival 2023

The focus of this workshop will be on designing tree shapes and expressing foliage with the fewest strokes with artist Geoff Allen.


During workshops, participants will have the opportunity to receive expert guidance and instruction from experienced artists. Participants will learn specific techniques depending on the artist who is teaching, receive personalized feedback on their work, and get to ask questions about the Plein Air painting process all while capturing some of Oceanside’s most iconic scenery. Workshops are limited to 15 participants and are not included in Plein Air Festival registration.

Eileen McCullough “Capturing the Coastal Community” Workshop | Oceanside Plein Air Festival 2023

Artist Eileen McCullough is recognized for the vibrant, fluid watercolor painting style that captures the sensation of Southern California beach communities. She is a signature member of LAPAPA and holds a Master signature membership of Watercolor West. Paint along with Eileen as she paints the Aqua Cafe. Follow her three-step process. Learn how she establishes her whites and glazes by layering transparent washes and finishes with energetic calligraphy.


During workshops, participants will have the opportunity to receive expert guidance and instruction from experienced artists. Gabriel Stockton: “Oceanside Pier” Workshop | Oceanside Plein Air Festival 2023

Learn how to create a snapshot, a beautiful poem. If you’ve never painted on the beach, this is the class for you! Artist Gabriel Stockton will share how a quick mini-painting can receive an award from Andy Evans. We will uncover the confidence in painting moving landscapes through painting on the beach.

Come set up in Guajome Park and learn how to apply John F. Carlson’s rules, essentially four masses that make up a good landscape with the artist, Toni Williams.

Eileen McCullough: “Fun with Watercolor Sketching” Workshop | Oceanside Plein Air Festival 2023

Sketching outdoors is relaxing and fun. You are free of the demands and expectations associated with a finished watercolor painting.

Follow along with artist, Eileen McCullough, as she demos her creative carefree style. The subject matter will be beachgoers and the festivities centered around the Oceanside Pier. The focus will be on sketching with a brush plus, lessons on signage, umbrellas, banners, bikes, and bodyboarders.

Bring a comfy chair, small watercolor paper or sketchbook, some travel paints, and a few brushes. After the workshop, Eileen will demo how she incorporates her small sketches into her finished paintings.

  • Watercolor sketch paper. (ex. Canson blue 140 cold press pad 11×14, 8×10 Travel palette)
  • A few brushes (ex 3⁄4 inch flat, half-inch flat, small Chinese calligraphy brush)
