Distinguished Lecture Series: Major Collectors & Collections
Art museums are considered cathedrals of the late 20th century and beginning of the 21st. Major collections of art will be explored along with their benefactors, exhibitions, and museums.
Billions of dollars are spent each year on the collection of art by the wealthy and powerful. These elite art collectors are nothing new. The most influential people of Europe have bought or stolen art for centuries. Thanks to kings and conquerors, the treasures of the Louvre and other art museums did not appear by accident.
This presentation will explore the early 20th century collection of Dr. Albert Barnes of Philadelphia and contrast that with the contemporary 21st century artwork collected by Eli Broad of Los Angeles. Both men exemplify a vision for the artistic creativity of their time. The Barnes Collection has more Renoirs than the entire city of Paris. His diverse collections of old masters and Impressionism cannot be priced. Eli Broad collects one work of contemporary art each week. He has over $2.2 billion worth of art as of 2015.

Hedda Gabler
Hedda Gabler is arguably one of the most complex and intriguing female characters ever written. The mesmerizing tale of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage and driven by a need for power and freedom will inspire art for this upcoming exhibition.
Artist Alliance submissions deadline: April 25
Exhibition reception: June 9
Way Downriver
A flood of Biblical proportions on the mighty Mississippi provides the dramatic backdrop to this gripping, edge-of-your seat adventure as well as inspiration for the works in the exhibition. Adapted from the William Faulkner short story, Old Man, Way Downriver reveals an unlikely pair of souls who are bound together by the forces of nature, and who struggle to overcome their fears and prejudice in order to survive harrowing experiences.
Artist Alliance submissions deadline: March 7
Exhibition reception: April 21
Now You See It
OMA Artist Alliance members will contribute works with humorous themes of jealousy bordering on paranoia, a philandering husband, hypnotism, a spurned lover, and a scandalous discovery to complement the play. Furiously fast and clever, the performance is a visual and verbal treat that is guaranteed to tickle your funny bone.
Exhibition reception: March 3
Sherlock Holmes And The Adventure Of The Great Nome Gold Rush
The first in a new collaboration with North Coast Repertory Theatre, this juried exhibition of works by OMA Artist Alliance members complements the play of the same name with themes of intrigue, mystery, deception, murder, and duplicity in the Wild West frontier town of Nome, Alaska and a bar run by the infamous Wyatt Earp.
Deanne Sabeck: Luminous
This intimate exhibition of glass and light is a visual feast of color, form, and altering perceptions. Reality transforms into illusion with the changing definitions of surfaces and reflections, defined and created through the play between light and shadow. Forming the structures for many of the pieces represented in this exhibition are articulated panes of glass typically found in jalousie, or louvre, windows. These mechanical devices become interactive sculptural canvases. Museum visitors are encouraged to manipulate the glass panes of the louvers so that light is reflected and re-directed, creating a unique experience of the artwork with every interaction.
Bill Rastetter: Street Art Reinterpreted
Inspired by the relationship between art and activism expressed in graffiti on the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina, photographer Bill Rastetter sought to create a broader spectrum of experience for the viewer by “mashing up” two separate images to create each of his final pieces. Each is the result of overlaying two full-frame 60-megapixel photographs allowing the viewer to see the bottom image “through” the top image. Also included in the mash-ups are overlaid images from works by well known artists such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Federico Botero, among others, all displayed at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires.
The Museum Ball: A Night At The Casbah
Each year The Museum Ball dazzles attendees as an absolutely spectacular experience. This year the event opens with guests enjoying a twilight champagne reception on the museum’s expansive Biogen-Idec Terrace and cascades into the grand Frederick Fisher lobby. From there guests travel to the splendor of the Oceanside Civic Center Plaza which will be overcome with dancing under the stars to the sounds of The Fabulous Pelicans, following cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, elegant al fresco dining by Crown Point Catering, and an exciting live auction and opportunity drawing designed to support the museum’s educational programs and highly regarded exhibitions.
Early bird pricing $175 per person until June 30, $200 thereafter
