Vincent Van Gogh lived and painted in the South of France for only a few years, yet created some of his most important work there—including his sunflower paintings. Originally created as decorations for his studio, we trace the history of the sunflower paintings, including one that was destroyed by a World War II bomb, and its rediscovery in a long uncovered photograph.

Between 1914 and 1918, Walter Ufer differentiated himself artistically from other artists of the day by painting Native American subjects gazing out directly, even defiantly, at the (presumably) Euro-American viewer. Ufer’s paintings from this time are unsettling because the “gaze” emphasized that Ufer’s subjects, Pueblo Indians from Taos, New Mexico, were real people rather than romantic fictions, and that the paintings themselves were artificial spaces created by the artist.

Beginning and experienced artists will play, relax, and have fun with shapes, lines, patterns, and textures while learning about color usage, focal points, balance, and composition. This workshop blends concrete guidelines with creativity and passion. View abstracts by known artists and learn how abstract art can stem from realism or from pure shape and color. Experiment with both random placement and conscious manipulation. Specific projects will be worked on in class. You may also bring your own projects to work on (with individual attention from Linda) to improve color, composition, and the professional appearance of your work. Different material will be covered in Workshop I and Workshop II, and Workshop I is not a prerequisite for II, register for either or both.
Supply list (some materials can be supplied, but you may still want to bring your own):

Parents can explore OMA’s current exhibitions while the little ones go downstairs to the Van Hunnick Education Center and get creative. Stories, music, and other activities get kids ready to create their own masterpiece to take home. For June the kids will learn and talk about the ocean, fish, and sea creatures before creating their own underwater scene.
