Through an immersive installation of artwork created by people incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility (Donovan), a men’s maximum security prison in Otay Mesa, Art Transports Us Out of Bounds: Prison Arts in San Diego encourages discussion around the daily life of people behind bars and the state of arts rehabilitation programming within the California prison system. The showcased two- and three-dimensional pieces represent a selection of work made by inmates currently participating in an eight month course organized by Project PAINT: The Prison Arts INiTiative, an Arts-in-Corrections program funded by the California Arts Council and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Often autobiographical in nature, these works shed light on our local incarcerated population, their personal experiences and histories, and their individual journeys as people who have been removed from society. Museum visitors will gain insight into what it is like both to venture into Donovan as a visitor and as a prisoner.
