FRED TOMASELLI: AFTER CALIFORNIA

July 28–December 2, 2018

Curated By Rhonda Gawthrop

This in-depth selection of the artist’s expansive practice from 1990 to present will draw visitors into the magic, curiosity, alchemy, escapism, humor, and beauty of Fred Tomaselli’s visual language. This exhibition will explore how Tomaselli’s well-known recent works reflect back to his upbringing and formative years in Southern California in the 1970s and ’80s when he witnessed the simultaneous implosion of modernism and utopian ideals of the ’60s. These events led Tomaselli to what he calls “a crisis of faith,” which compelled him to look outside the art world for new ways of expanding his mind. These experiences continue to inform the work he makes today—work that explores relationships between man and nature, nature and technology, and our own chemical makeup and the exploration of utopia/dystopia.

This exhibition is supported by Ving and Valya Simpson.
