QUILT VISIONS
returns to OMA

Stir It Up by Dan Olfe
Cyborg Female No.4- M#2417B by Kathy Weaver
Oceanside Museum of Art proudly presents its third
Quilt Visions exhibition, Quilt Visions 2006.
Continuing its tradition of presenting art quilts from around the
world, this show was organized by Quilt San Diego/Quilt Visions.
A distinguished panel of jurors selected the show from 725 entries
submitted by 318 artists from 20 countries. As one of the most prestigious
art quilt exhibitions of international scope, it is especially exciting
this year to feature the work of 16 artists who are appearing in
Quilt Visions for the first time. The consistency of these biennial
productions has guaranteed that this exhibition will be as visually
creative and technically masterful as past Quilt Visions.
The three jurors who accepted the challenge of selecting 43 works
of art from a field of exceptional quality deserve high praise for
choices that reflect the broad range of styles present in contemporary
art quilts today. Jane Dunnewold, Patricia Malarcher, and Lloyd
Herman have chosen a show that not only satisfies the traditional
construction of quilts, but offers surprises in design and non-traditional
materials.
The OMA docents and Quilt San Diego docents have joined together
to lend their knowledge and insight into one of contemporary art’s
most expressive media. They will be providing tours for groups and
casual drop-ins, sharing their enthusiasm in the quilts and the
artists who create them.
A preview reception with many of the artists will be held at the
museum on Saturday, November 11, 2006 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Admission to the preview reception is $8 and is complimentary for
members of OMA. The exhibition continues November 12 through January
21, 2007.
Oceanside Museum of Art is located at 704 Pier View Way in downtown
Oceanside. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m.
to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The museum is closed on
Mondays and major holidays. General admission is $5 with $3 admission
for seniors, students and active military.
WASTE MANAGEMENT OF NORTH COUNTY
DONATES $10,000 TO OMA EXPANSION

Waste Management of North County, which operates in and provides
waste and recycling service to the City of Oceanside, has donated
$10,000 to Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) for the expansion of the
museum.
Two checks in the amount of $5,000 each from Waste Management’s
WM Charitable Foundation and also the local Waste Management of
North County hauling operation were delivered to the museum’s
director on June 24, 2006. Ken Ryan, district manager of Waste Management
of North County, and John Lusignan, who retired last year after
17 years as district manager and continues to remain active in the
Oceanside community, presented the checks.
“With this gift and recent pledges, the museum is now within
$70,000 if its total goal of $5.35 million. Construction on Phase
One of the museum’s expansion is scheduled for September of
this year,” said Skip Pahl, OMA’s executive director.
“Waste Management values the museum as a partner in the renaissance
of Oceanside and its support is evident over the years as sponsor
of the museum’s many fundraisers.”
Phase One of the museum’s expansion consists of a two-story
building designed by modernist architect Frederick Fisher on what
is now the parking lot next to the present museum. It will house
a gallery for rotating exhibitions, a gallery for the museum’s
permanent collection, a conference room and the museum’s research
library. A plaza leading into the lobby of the new building will
direct visitors to the main entrance of the museum.
“Waste Management is proud to be an active supporter of the
communities we serve,” said Ryan. “We believe that this
contribution to the Oceanside Museum of Art will help to further
develop this cultural center in Oceanside, providing not only an
educational resource for local residents and visitors, but also
an outlet for our artistic community. We are excited to be a part
of the museum’s growth.”
