| OMA Home > Newsletters > Winter 2003 OMA Regional 3 Oceanside Museum of Art presents its third juried exhibition of regional artists, OMA Regional 3 on view now through January 4, 2004. The jury of three esteemed members of the San Diego arts community were challenged to chose from 607 submissions from 199 artists. OMA Regional 3 was juried by Mark Quint, Director of the Quint Gallery, La Jolla; Reesey Shaw, Director of the Lux Art Institute, Encinitas; and Tina Yapelli, Director of the University Gallery, San Diego State University. The exhibition features 33 original artworks completed within the past two years and includes paintings, mixed media, and sculpture. This exhibition featuring the fine art of twenty artists is a provocative selection showcasing recent trends in contemporary art. Irv Simpson, curator of the OMA Regional 3, says it's a wonderful opportunity to get a glimpse of the extraordinary talent existing in the region today. Generation to Generation: Assemblage to Installation Generation to Generation: Assemblage to Installation features found objects that have a specific history. Guest curators Debby and Larry Kline describe these recycled objects as being co-mingled with new or personal materials that yield a second generation of combined ideas and insights. This exhibition at the Oceanside Museum of Art opens with a preview reception January 24th and continues through March 21, 2004. The term "assemblage" was coined in 1953 by artist Jean Dubuffet to describe any three-dimensional collage composed of found objects. Debby and Larry Kline use the term in a contemporary context, one that extends the format to include room-sized installations which viewers may enter. The exhibition features the work of artists James Watts, Irma Sophia Poeter and Poupee Boccaccio. Each artist creates art imbued with strongly personal histories by combining personal and found objects into artist-made objects. These disparate elements are assembled to offer fresh meanings for viewers. Meet the artists at a preview reception, Saturday, January 24th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Oceanside Museum of Art. Cost for the reception is $8 and includes the fabulous hors d'oeuvres that OMA is famous for created by its own Culinary Arts Council. Members of OMA are free. | Coming Events | | November 15 through January 4 | OMA Regional 3 Juried fine art from San Diego area artists | | December 11 10 AM -- 12 PM | Meet Me at the Museum Members bring a friend for free, Breakfast and docent tour | December 18 10 AM - 8 PM | Free Day with Extended Hours | January 24 5 - 7 PM | Generation to Generation: Assemblage to Installation Preview Reception | | January 25 through March 21 | Generation to Generation: Assemblage to Installation | | February 5 | New Orleans Architecture, Culture & Music tour 6 day travel fund-raiser | February 22 10 AM - 1 PM | Mardi Gras Brunch | | February 26 | Norton Simon Museum Gamble House Old Pasadena lunch bus trip | Why I'm a Member At any event for the Oceanside Museum of Art, you're likely to see Dr. Rick Mohrlock greeting people as they arrive. Rick says, "People are amazed that we have this museum in Oceanside." Rick is one of those people. Rick has become a leader in the community since he began his dental practice here in 1975. With Rotary, the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, Days of Art, the Gershwin Festival, and free dental work for children in Mexico, Rick keeps busy helping and giving to the community. So why did Rick add OMA to his other causes? "Four years ago I went to a preview reception for an exhibit at the museum," he said. "There were so many people there that I already knew and liked. I went to the next opening because I thought, WOW! I liked the art and it opened my eyes. I was so happy that the museum was right here in Oceanside." Soon Rick was on the Board singing the praises of the museum. He jokes with his patients that if they want anesthesia they should first consider membership in the museum. His zeal comes across in the many presentations he makes as chair of OMA's Speaker's Bureau. With all Rick does for the museum, he finds that he gets more back. "I'm much more interested in art than I used to be," he says. "I like the energy at the museum. The people are positive, interesting and upbeat." People like Rick Mohrlock. From the OMA-Artist Alliance . . . The ongoing Artist Alliance exhibition in the lobby of the Bank of America, corner of Mission Avenue and Ditmar Street, has become very popular with bank patrons and staff. Last month the Artist Alliance hosted a free reception for the artists in the bank lobby and the public voted for their favorite works of art. Many members of Artist Alliance had artwork on view for the OMA-School of Art Student Show. A reception for the artists was well attended on November 15th. Thanks to Artist Alliance volunteers Clay Alexander, Gene Coyne, Joe and Mary Villela, Carrie Ventola, Linda Gillen and Jeanine Buntain who cleaned and painted the School of Art in time for the reception. Congratulations to the instructors and artists for a grand show. If you are an artist in the area and wish to become involved in an organization that promotes your work and supports the Oceanside Museum of Art, you may want to consider membership. OMA-Artist Alliance is a level of museum membership for artists who wish to encourage art in our community by exhibiting at local venues and who wish to support the museum. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month for members to share ideas, network with other artists and to discuss exhibition opportunities. Current members: please note that meetings have been changed to the first Tuesday of the month, locations will be announced in advance of each meeting. OMA-Artist Alliance members have the benefit to be included in the Artist Alliance portfolio and slide registry available to the public to view during museum hours in the museum store. Artists can present a visual representation of their work along with their resume and exhibition history, bio and contact information. If you have not seen the portfolio, check it out! From the Director . . . PLEASE GIVE TO THE OMA HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN The museum's annual Holiday Campaign was launched on November 20th. This is a special opportunity for members and donors to support the museum by making a year-end contribution that is 100% tax deductible. Funds raised in the campaign provide vital annual operating support for exhibits, programs, and the nuts-and-bolts expenses like insurance and utilities. If you believe that OMA is a point of pride as you consider the positive changes occurring in the cultural life of our region... And, if you find the museum to be an important place for keeping in touch with your friends and the region's creative community... And, if you believe that art is a vital part of our children's education that cultivates their human potential and dignity... Then please be generous as the year comes to a close. Your gift will help ensure that the museum continues its long and proud tradition of ending each fiscal year in the black.
