Fisher was chosen from a field of 28 architects who presented qualifications for review by the museum's Architect Selection Commitee. The museum's Board of Trustees approved the choice of the Architect Selection Commitee at a celebratory champagne reception held November 6th at the museum. Paul Dooley, chair of the committee, said the competition attracted a lot of interest from the architectural community. Several architects had distinguished reputations for museum designs that incorporate historic buildings, an important characteristic of OMA's existing Irving Gill design. Dooley and Architect Selection Committee members Sandra Chanis, Doris Groves, Peggy Jacobs, and Skip Pahl spent months visiting sites and considering proposals. Each member of the committee brought to the decision making process a professional background in design and a sensitivity to the needs of the museum and to the cultural arts of the community. The committee members were unanimous in choosing Fisher's design for its visionary concept for the expansion. Fisher is recognized as a rising star in California architecture with award winning projects that include the LA Louver Gallery in Venice and the new wing of the Long Beach Museum of Art. The committee felt that Fisher's elegant modernist style will work beautifully with Gill's early modernist designs for the present museum, Oceanside's first City Hall and Fire Station #1. Fisher's work will begin following approval of his selection by the Oceanside City Council. The expansion project is expected to occur in phases with completion in the year 2006. The new museum will provide space for 3 exhibition galleries, an expanded museum store, the museum's School of Art, a 125 seat auditorium, and storage space for a permanent collection. | | The OMA Board of Trustees and the Architect Selection Committee with conceptual model of the expansion | | Coming Events | | continuing through January 5 | QUILT VISIONS 2002 Contemporary Art Quilts | | January 25 5:00 - 7:00 PM | Preview Reception Paintings from the E. JUNK FUNK OUTREACH FUNDED BY CITY OF OCEANSIDE OMA is fortunate to provide an after school Outreach program in the Oceanside City Schools for the 2002-2003 school year after receiving a grant of $10,000 from the City of Oceanside. Funded by the California Department of Conservation, the grant is designed to demonstrate to school children how CRV (California redemption value) beverage containers can be recycled into art. Titled "Junk Funk" this Outreach program introduces visual and performing arts to students who may not be exposed to an enriching arts experience in their classrooms. Using CRV beverage containers, the students learn how to create 3-dimensional art objects and discover how to make and play musical instruments from used containers that are often viewed as junk. Taught by professional art instructors, the six-week "Junk Funk" Outreach program will meet three afternoons a week in four elementary schools in Oceanside. At Santa Margarita Elementary School recently, a visitor remarked at the enthusiastic participation of students under the direction of Outreach instructor, Eduardo Para, who demonstrated how music and dance can become a complete performance beginning with simple rhythms played on recyclable containers. Students were jumping up for turns to be "next" as Parra created an orchestra from the enthusiastic "musicians-in-the-making" who learned a variety of rhythms on their new percussion instruments. Other instructors for the "Junk Funk" Outreach program are Helen Shafer Garcia-visual art, Nikola Clay-dance and Keith Larsen-visual art.
