November 17 - January 6, 2002

Caldecott Medal winners David Diaz and Ezra Jack Keats are featured in Snowy Day & Smoky Night beginning November 17th and closing January 6, 2002. This two-part exhibit comes from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene, Texas.

Diaz, an illustrator who began his career with The San Diego Reader, has illustrated numerous children’s books. The bold and graphic illustrations for his first book, Smoky Night by Eve Bunting, earned a Caldecott Medal in 1995.

Keats, an icon of children’s literature, authored and/or illustrated more than 85 books in his lifetime. His Caldecott book, Snowy Day was considered groundbreaking, both for his use of collage and his portrayal of the urban experiences of children of color.

These delightful illustrations can be viewed at OMA Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. General admission is $5, Seniors, Students and active Military with ID are $3. OMA members are free.

Snowy Day & Smoky Night curator Teresa Ellis has organized a variety of special programs to accompany this exhibit. On December 1, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators will present a Panel Discussion and Book Sale at the museum, 10:00 AM to 12 noon. Also, on December 1, the Oceanside Public Library-Civic Center will host a Children’s Collage Workshop from 2:00-3:00 PM. A Bookmaking Workshop will be held at the Oceanside Public Library-Civic Center, 2:00-3:00 PM. Children’s workshops at the library are free for children ages 5 and older, however, pre-registration is required. Call the library at 760-435-5590. A museum tour follows each workshop from 3:00-3:30. Smoky Night illustrator, David Diaz will present a Slide Lecture and Demonstration on December 13th at the museum, 7-9:00 PM. Admission for OMA members is free, $5 for non-members.

John Garrett Retrospective: January 26 through March 17, 2002

The work of internationally recognized textile artist John Garrett is featured in a one-person retospective which opens with a preview reception January 26th at OMA. Known for the application of textile technologies and imagery to various materials, Garrett has been pushing the boundaries of traditional fiber art and textiles for the past twenty-five years. Currently, a full-time studio artist in New Mexico, he taught for many years at colleges and universities in California. He has been teaching workshops on creativity and experimental basketry nationwide for several years. Garrett’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout his professional career. Many museums have Garrett’s work in their permanent collections including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the High Museum, the American Craft Museum, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Albuquerque Museum. He was awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1983 and 1995.

OMA Plans Cuban Adventure

Oceanside Museum of Art is proud to offer a two-week tour of Cuba from March1 to March 15, 2002. This tour will appeal to you if you are longing to experience this island and its wealth of art, music and architecture. If you don’t want to worry about arranging transportation and accommodations, join us as we travel by jet directly from LAX to Cuba.

While in Cuba you will tour Old Havana including the four main squares and go to Old Havana’s crafts market. A visit to Trinidad is planned, an old Colonial and historical city called a “living museum” and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Other locales on the itinerary are Cienfuegos with its Moorish style Palacio del Valle, Santiago de Cuba, a city of many cultures and Las Terrazas, one of the newer towns built after the revolution.

This Cuban adventure will take you past sugar cane fields and coffee plantations as you travel across the island. You will hear lectures and visit galleries of leading artists, ceramists, painters, photographers, architects, historians and musicians.

This travel opportunity is available only to OMA members. Cost is $3,085 per person with a single supplement of $265. It includes the flight from Los Angeles, comfortable accommodations, at least two meals daily including breakfast, group transportation from Oceanside and in Cuba, entrance fees and a local guide who speaks fluent English. A deposit of $750 is due by December 10, 2001. This could be the best holiday gift you could give yourself.

The Circus Loosely Inspires Adult Day Center Visitors

Participants from The Sam & Rose Stein Adult Day Center in Encinitas created sculptures from recycled materials after viewing the art of DeLoss McGraw in OMA’s recent exhibition. McGraw’s work featured figures that reflected the title of the exhibit, The Circus Loosely. The participants from the Stein Center created a variety of sculptures that became a sculpture garden at the Center, a the highlight of their Open House. Some of the sculptures are now on display at the Encinitas Library and just recently three pieces were placed in the entryway of the Enviro Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This continuing, creative traveling exhibition demonstrates one of the valuable ways that OMA contributes to the enrichment of the community.

Artist Alliance plans “Phantom Gallery”

The OMA-Artist Alliance has developed a plan to present exhibits in available spaces in the community. A “show site” committee has been organized to plan locations and installation needs and they already have their first opportunity for exhibition space.

With the support of OMA, gallery space on “Artists’ Alley” has been made available to the Artist Alliance by Mr. Rich Cicoletti of Somerset Development. “Artists’ Alley” runs between Pier View Way and Mission Ave. behind the businesses on North Coast Highway. Cara Moczygemba is coordinating the preparation of the space for exhibition purposes. Members of OMA-Artist Alliance will have the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work as soon as the space is ready. Lighting fixtures will need to be purchased and installed and to that end the members of Artist Alliance will be selling their original hand-made holiday ornaments as a fund-raising effort to purchase the lighting.

Ornaments are on display and will be for sale at the Artist Alliance booth at the Oceanside Farmer’s Market on three consecutive Thursday mornings, Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. A minimum donation of $10 will give you a unique holiday gift or decoration and help the Artist Alliance to reach their goal of obtaining gallery lighting.

The Oceanside Farmer’s Market is located on Pier View Way between Coast Highway and Ditmar every Thusday morning from 9:00 AM until 12:30 PM. Plans are for the Artist Alliance gallery to be open 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM during the Farmer’s Market and from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturdays. Volunteers are needed and encouraged to attend the next Artist Alliance meeting January 4th at 1:00 PM. Call Artist Alliance Coordinator, Jan King for details, 966-0747.

Tribute to Two Very Special Ladies: Estelle Gleason and Elinore King

OMA is saddened by the recent loss of two very special women who were exceptional in their committment to Oceanside Museum of Art and to the community where they lived. It is a tribute to their support and dedication to the museum that has helped OMA to become established as a prominent beacon for cultural arts programming in North San Diego County.

Estelle Gleason, together with her husband Bob, gave the leadership gift to OMA that was the foundation for the extensive renovation of the historic Irving Gill designed building that is home to the museum today. Their vision for the role of a museum in a community and the ability the museum has to enrich the lives of the families it serves provides the inspiration for the expansion of the museum.

Elinore King brought her enthusiasm for volunteering to OMA as its long-time Volunteer Coordinator. She developed the museum’s reception desk volunteer program, and trained and scheduled OMA’s volunteer staff with her usual combination of grace, cheerfulness and professionalism. The volunteer program she established is still the model for our dedicated corps of volunteers.
