Out of oceanside: Aitchison, Gross & Tysinger

Oceanside Museum of Art presents some of the most exciting artwork to come “Out of Oceanside” in an exhibit that features three established artists with national reputations who live or work in Oceanside. Artists James Aitchison, Michael C. Gross, and Burton Tysinger will be the focus of this exhibition that is bold, bright and full of visual drama.

Chouinard Art Institute alumnus James Aitchison is a figurative painter who has exhibited throughout the world. His lyrical paintings are imbued with symbolism from mythology, literature and his extensive travels. Aitchison says that making paintings is an intensely interesting way of finding out what the imagination might look like.

Michael C. Gross is best known as an art director and producer of films like Ghostbusters and Twins, but he is also a celebrated pastel painter with themes that reflect his Hollywood experiences and also his life in Africa, a body of work that he likes to describe as “spiritual polar opposites.”

Designer Burton Tysinger uses painted wooden line segments to create sculptures that become a labryrinth of color and form. His work can be intimate and personal in scale or monumental and expansive. Tysinger says it is the “gesture” of things, thoughts and events that serve as a departure point of a piece.

A Preview Reception will be held at the museum on Saturday, July 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. featuring the fabulous hors d’oeuvres of OMA’s Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $8.00 and is open to the public. Admission for members of Oceanside Museum of Art is free.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN PUSHES PAST $2 MILLION MARK

Gifts received in the month of May from a combination of individuals, foundations and corporations have now totaled over $966,000. They have propelled the OMA capital campaign past the $2 million mark on its way toward the $5 million goal that is needed for our planned expansion.

In this effort the museum will grow from its present 5,000 sq. ft. to 32,000 sq. ft. as we construct the Frederick Fisher designed central pavilion and renovate the Irving Gill designed Firehouse #1. The expansion will add two elegant exhibition galleries, a much needed exhibit production facility, a catering kitchen for our fabulous special events, a collection storage facility, and an auditorium for films, lectures and concerts. It will also allow the museum to incorporate the OMA School of Art into the museum complex.

Plans for the expansion are currently being reviewed by various city commissions. The Oceanside City Council and Staff have moved with remarkable speed purchasing a property just north of City Hall for the replacement Firehouse. Groundbreaking is scheduled for February of 2005.The first phase central pavilion will be completed by February of 2006. The second phase Firehouse will be completed by the end of the same year.

The warm and enthusiastic donor response has shown us that this is clearly a project whose time has come. But, to be successful, the full museum membership must help. If you believe as we do that OMA is transforming the cultural life of North County San Diego, please send in your pledge of support. If you would like more information or additional copies of the campaign prospectus and pledge card, please call me at 760.721.2787.
