The building which houses the Oceanside Museum of Art was originally the Oceanside City Hall, designed by Gill, dedicated in 1934, and remodeled into a state-of-the art museum in 1997. A preview reception will introduce the exhibition on Saturday evening, June 21st, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with fabulous hors d'oeuvres prepared by OMA's own Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $8 or free for museum members. The exhibition continues through August 17,2003. Architect Irving J. Gill (1870-1936) is widely considered the most important architect in San Diego. The City of Oceanside has been home to many fine examples of his architecture including Fire Station Number One adjacent to the museum. Several of Gill's grand designs were planned for Oceanside during his mature period. His career spanned the transition from Victorian Revival styles through Arts & Crafts and early Modernism to Art Deco. Gill's life and work have been the subject of several books, many articles, lectures and museum exhibitions dating back to 1958. A new exhibition of Gill's work is long overdue. This will be the first to focus on his influential work in North County. It will include examples of Gill's earlier designs that show his progression from the Arts and Crafts influence to the pure Modernism which characterizes the Oceanside buildings. The exhibit will feature original drawings and plans, furniture, photographs, and artifacts salvaged from now demolished structures. Much of the material has never been shown. Historic researcher and preservation activist Erik Hanson is the guest curator. He is also the creator of the preeminent website regarding Gill. Irving Gill in Oceanside is being supported in part by a grant from the Nathan Cummings Foundation with the support and encouragement of Michelle Cummings. The exhibition will include a model of the museum's planned expansion with a two-story building that links the present museum to the Gill-designed Fire Station, which the city plans to relocate. Los Angeles architect Frederick Fisher is designing the entire complex that connects each of the Gill buildings and restores the Fire Station to its original exterior. | Coming Events | | June 22-August 17 | Irving Gill in Oceanside recognizes Gill as a leader in American Modernism whose impact on San Diego's lifestyle is evident in his clean, elegant designs. Over the past months the OMA-Artist Alliance has been actively searching for new exhibition venues. During Oceanside's Days of Art held in April, the Artist Alliance presented an exhibition at the OMA-School of Art. A number of visitors were welcomed to view the work of twenty artists. The Bank of America, one of OMA's downtown Oceanside neighbors, is the host venue for the next Artist Alliance exhibition beginning June 9th and continuing throughout the month of June. The artwork is on view during regular bank hours and the bank is located on the corner of Mission Avenue and Ditmar Street in downtown Oceanside. Several discussion items are on the agenda for future Artist Alliance meetings. Suggestions for programs and educational development are always encouraged as well as other possible meeting times. Because of the Independence Day Holiday, the July meeting will be at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2nd at the OMA-Schoolof Art. The OMA-Artist Alliance is a level of museum membership for artists who wish to encourage art in our community by exhibiting at local venues and who wish to support the museum. Artist Alliance meetings are held on the first Friday of every month and provide an opportunity for members to share ideas, network with other artists and to discuss exhibition opportunities. OMA-Artist Alliance members have the benefit to be included in the Artist Alliance portfolio and slide registry available to the public for viewing during museum hours in the museum store. Artists can present a visual representation of their work along with their resume and exhibition history, bio and contact information. From the Director . . . With the opening of the new exhibit, Irving Gill in Oceanside, and the introduction of architect Frederick Fisher's museum design that joins our two revered Gill buildings, we are witnessing an historic moment. A region is remaking itself. OMA has been a leader in this renaissance. It has helped to define and to celebrate our cultural underpinnings, and brought urgently needed arts programming to area school children. It is recognized for its excellent arts programming and appreciated as a wonderful place to stay connected with friends and community. Not surprisingly, it has also become an engine for cultural tourism that contributes to the economic health of the region. Whatever your reason for being a part of the OMA family, I hope you'll join us on Saturday evening, June 21st as we honor Irving Gill's legacy in Oceanside and present the plans for a new cultural landmark in North County. -- Skip Pahl OMA TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2003 The Baltic Sea Cruise Plans are underway for the 17 day "Vikings and Czars Baltic Cruise" aboard the ms Oosterdam, a new vessel in Holland America's spectacular sailing fleet.
