| OMA Home > Newsletters > Summer 2002 Rock & Roll Preview Reception, June 15th 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Exhibition runs through August 4th. Oceanside Museum of Art proudly presents Rock & Roll, an exhibition that explores the fine art of hand painted guitars and skateboards and includes vintage advertisements and contemporary logos. The exhibition opens with a preview reception Saturday, June 15, 2002 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and continues through August 4, 2002. The reception is open to the public and is free for OMA members and $5 for non-members. This collection utilizes guitar bodies and skateboard decks as an alternative to traditional canvases and sculpture. Designs include portraits, abstraction, outsider art, faux finishes and pop culture imagery. Two curators are working together to combine these unconventional art forms. Robert Perine, the graphic artist for Fender guitar ad campaigns in the 60s, is creating the "rock" half of Rock & Roll. Michael Fee is handling the "roll' half of the exhibit, working with the Southern California skateboard industry and the designers of some classic skateboard decks. Both are curators with OMA's exhibitions department. Robert Perine says, "It's not surprising that some guitarists have personalized their instruments, given that a musician's instrument is his voice and he becomes attached to it, preserving it, keeping it in good condition, letting it mellow over time. The addition of decoration, highly crafted inlays and the guitarist's signature reminds us that visual art seems to be closely related to music and, in many ways, enhances it." Talking with skateboard artists from the area, Michael Fee has discovered that skateboarding and the appreciation for a superb ride appeals to people from all professional and economic backgrounds. That the ride should look good and carry a message just adds to the experience. "This exhibition presents art that has never gotten you so far or sounded so good!" says Fee. | Coming Events | | June 15 - August 4 | Rock & Roll An exhibition showcasing the art of guitars and skateboards. | | June 21 5:00 PM | Pre-Ball Party La Nuit des Beaux Arts IX - "The Masked Ball" at the museum. | | July 27 6:00 - 11:00 PM | La Nuit des Beaux Arts IX "The Masked Ball" OMA & Civic Center Plaza | | August 24 | Ethel Greene Retrospective An exhibition featuring the surrealist paintings of leading San Diego artist, Ethel Greene, 1912 - 1999 continues through October 13 | | August 25 1:00 - 4:00 PM | OMA-School of Art Open House Student exhibition | THE CONTEST CONTINUES Competition is fierce among the members of OMA volunteers, staff and Board of Trustees in the ongoing membership contest. Big winners so far have enjoyed the applause of their fellow competitors as they bring new members to the museum. Top in the field of competitors is OMA Board President, Mary Rombotis, who has brought 12 new members to the museum. Way to go, Mary! A close second place in the contest is Membership Chairperson, Bobbie Thill, with 9 new memberships, followed by Trustee Rick Mohrlock with 8 and Front Desk Volunteer, John Watts with 7. Some spirited efforts are underway between Rick and John, both touting the benefits of OMA membership whenever and wherever they can. Stiff competition is also coming from Sara Botts and Don Gaudio, both on the Membership Committee and from OMA Vice President Tom Nunan and Past President, Sandra Chanis. Another strong competitor is Donna Wilkins, Front Desk Volunteer on Saturday afternoons. The brainchild of Membership Chairperson, Bobbie Thill, the membership contest has brought 89 new members to the museum since the mailing of the last newsletter. Contest winners receive a gift membership to give to a lucky family or business with every 5 new members who join the museum. Hats off to those who are spreading the word about OMA. DORIS GROVES & BOB PICKREL "MEDAL OF DISTINCTION" HONOREES AT La Nuit des Beaux Arts Doris Groves | Bob Pickrel | OMA has the pleasure of awarding the "Medal of Distinction" this year to Bob Pickrel and Doris Groves, two people who have contributed in an extraordinary way to the cultural arts of the community and to the museum. One of the early champions of the museum, Bob Pickrel has served as treasurer on the Board of Trustees for Oceanside Museum of Art and for the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation since both organizations began. He retired as area Vice President after being with Bank of America for 41 years. His banking and investment experience has been vital to the museum's fiscal stability. He has served on the Board of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation for 24 years and also served on the board of the Boys & Girls Club. He has been a member of the Oceanside Rotary for 24 years and served on the Board of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce as treasurer. An avid golfer and occasional bodysurfer, Bob enjoys traveling and gardening with his lovely wife, Darlene. Doris Groves has been a volunteer at OMA since the museum's inauguration in 1997 and in 1999 she joined the OMA Board of Trustees. Doris is a diamond level donor to the museum having made a lead gift for the capital campaign. She is a world traveler and serves on the Architectural Selection Committee for the museum's expansion. Doris's professional expertise comes from a long and successful career in the fashion industry, first as a buyer for several prestigious department stores and later as an entrepreneur and import/export sales representative for eleven Western states. After many buying trips to Europe, she introduced several fine quality knitwear collections to the United States market and became a pioneer as a woman in a male oriented field. An active volunteer since retirement, Doris has remodeled Thrift stores for many charitable organizations, recognizing the needed resources the stores provide. She trained the volunteers to run an attractive and profitable shop, which greatly increased their revenues. She travels all over the world and recently returned from a trip to Cuba with the OMA Travel Club. ETHEL GREENE RETROSPECTIVE, August 24 - October 13 A leading San Diego artist, Ethel Greene was much admired by her peers and by collectors alike for the subtle humor and strong individual style that she brought to her work. In an interview with curator Mark-Elliott Lugo she described her fascination with the work of Surrealist painter Rene' Magritte (1898 - 1967) acknowledging his influence in her work. She said of herself as an artist that she tried every style that came along, but when her first solo show was exhibited at the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in 1956 (then the La Jolla Art Center) she received a glowing review for high artistic standards. Greene's direction toward surrealism became firmly established in the 1960s when she said of her images, "I think of what I can do to it so it will be the most surprising." Her reputation as a master artist and popular teacher brought her a level of recognition that reached beyond her modest demeanor.
