Convergence: Crossing the Divide

The Studio Furniture of Tasmania and America

Eight Tasmanian and eight North American studio furniture makers who share the common talents of design and craftsmanship converge in this exhibition that features the latest in contemporary studio furniture. The exhibit acknowledges Tasmania’s emergence onto the international stage as a thriving center for contemporary studio furniture. Studio furniture reflects the historical traditions of functional furniture but with sculptural interpretations that are often whimsical, sometimes dramatic. Studio furniture makers from Tasmania have been recognized as leaders in a field that took root in the United States with designers at the Rhode Island School of Design, Rochester Institute of Technology, San Diego State University, Penland School of Crafts, and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts - creative environments known as training grounds for contemporary designers.

Meet the artists and curators at a preview reception Saturday, April 16th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. OMA’s receptions have the reputation for being a great party with fabulous hors d’oeuvres prepared by OMA’s own Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $8 and is open to the public. Admission for members of Oceanside Museum of Art is complimentary. The exhibition continues through June 12, 2005.

Oceanside Museum of Art will host an “Evening with the Curators” on Monday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m. at the museum. Curators Penny Smith and John Smith of Tasmania join curator Wendy Maruyama of San Diego for an evening of discussion, sharing inspirations and influences from their travels and associations with other furniture makers. The Curator’s Evening is open to the public. Admission is $5 at the door. Admission for members of Oceanside Museum of Art is complimentary.

The museum is located at 704 Pier View Way in downtown Oceanside. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. General admission is $5.
