Brighton Press: The Art of the Book

The act of opening, reading and viewing a book is an act of engagement, a ritual involving touch, breath and deliberation. The artist books of Brighton Press in San Diego will be on view at Oceanside Museum of Art beginning April 11 and continuing through June 20, 2004. Brighton Press has been creating books with a staff of artists, poets and craftspeople since 1985. The books are made by hand and are published in editions that range from ten to one hundred copies. Brighton Press books are sought by art collectors, bibliophiles, and print collectors, and have also been acquired and exhibited by over seventy museums and libraries, including Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Research Institute, the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Public Library.

Brighton Press is actively involved in the life of a book, giving the artist exclusive use of the Brighton Press studio during the development. Intaglio, relief and letterpress printing are done on the premises. It is important to Brighton Press directors Bill Kelly and Michele Burgess, that a poem can be read in a museum and that an original work of art may be discovered in a library.

A Preview Reception will be held at the museum on Saturday, April 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. featuring the fabulous hors d’oeuvres of OMA’s Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $8.00 and is open to the public. Members of Oceanside Museum of Art are free.

The museum is located at 704 Pier View Way in downtown Oceanside. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays. General admission is $5. Seniors, students and active military are $3. For information about the exhibition or other museum programs, please call the museum at 760-721-2787 or visit the web site at www.oma-online.org.

Romance at OMA

Is the Oceanside Museum of Art romantic? Well, if it weren’t for the OMA, Carolyn Mickelson might not have chosen to marry. Carolyn was dating David Mickelson who lived in Oceanside, but she didn’t want to move from her Encinitas home. David went about finding ways to convince her that Oceanside was a great place to live. A visit to the OMA convinced her to say “Yes!”

“I remember that I was impressed by the show at the museum. I met Skip and he was very friendly and warm.” We thought, “Oh, what a great museum!” reminisces Carolyn.

Initially, Carolyn moved to California from Michigan to work in Hollywood. Los Angeles was not for her so she moved to San Diego and in 1992 started her own graphic design business. It continues to flourish. You’ve seen her work on the Museum Ball invitations for the last four years and now the Mardi Gras invitation, too. In addition to donating her design talent, Carolyn works on the Auction, Museum Ball, and Membership committees.

She has a busy schedule, but Carolyn says she loves working with all the creative and interesting people she meets at OMA. “The people involved are fun. The people and the exhibits both,” she adds.

There is a lot to love about the OMA, and Carolyn and David Mickelson are proof of it.

Why I'm a Member

At any event for the Oceanside Museum of Art, you're likely to see Dr. Rick Mohrlock greeting people as they arrive. Rick says, "People are amazed that we have this museum in Oceanside."

Rick is one of those people. Rick has become a leader in the community since he began his dental practice here in 1975. With Rotary, the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation, Days of Art, the Gershwin Festival, and free dental work for children in Mexico, Rick keeps busy helping and giving to the community.

So why did Rick add OMA to his other causes? "Four years ago I went to a preview reception for an exhibit at the museum," he said. "There were so many people there that I already knew and liked. I went to the next opening because I thought, WOW! I liked the art and it opened my eyes. I was so happy that the museum was right here in Oceanside." Soon Rick was on the Board singing the praises of the museum. He jokes with his patients that if they want anesthesia they should first consider membership in the museum. His zeal comes across in the many presentations he makes as chair of OMA's Speaker's Bureau. With all Rick does for the museum, he finds that he gets more back. "I'm much more interested in art than I used to be," he says. "I like the energy at the museum. The people are positive, interesting and upbeat."

People like Rick Mohrlock.

From the OMA-Artist Alliance . . .

The ongoing Artist Alliance exhibition in the lobby of the Bank of America, corner of Mission Avenue and Ditmar Street, has become very popular with bank patrons and staff. Last month the Artist Alliance hosted a free reception for the artists in the bank lobby and the public voted for their favorite works of art. Prize ribbons were awarded to Joe Villela, Joan Litsey, and Nancy Wright.

Recently, the Artist Alliance members exhibited at the Hill St. Cafe, the Flying Bridge Restaurant, and the Oceanside Welcome Center. There will be an Artist Alliance reception at the OMA-School of Art on April 10th at the same time as the preview reception at the museum for Brighton Press: The Art of the Book, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. so that visitors can attend both.

If you are an artist in the area and wish to become involved in an organization that promotes your work and supports the Oceanside Museum of Art, you may want to consider membership in the OMA-Artist Alliance. It is a museum membership for artists who also wish to encourage art in our community by exhibiting at local venues and who wish to support the museum. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month for members to share ideas, network with other artists and discuss exhibition opportunities. Current members: please note that meetings have been changed to the first Tuesday of the month, locations will be announced in advance of each meeting.

OMA-Artist Alliance members have the opportunity to be included in the Artist Alliance portfolio and slide registry available to the public to view during museum hours in the museum store. Artists can present a visual representation of their work along with their resume and exhibition history, bio and contact information. If you have not seen the portfolio, check it out!
