| OMA Home > Newsletters > Spring 2003 PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE SEA AT OMA Oceanside Museum of Art will unveil its first photography exhibition with a preview reception on Saturday, April 12th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. OMA's preview receptions have become known for their fabulous hors d'oeuvres prepared by OMA's own Culinary Arts Council. The $8.00 reception admission includes wine and hors d'oeuvres and a party atmosphere with other art lovers. OMA members are free. "By the Sea offers the chance to witness the beauty, mystery and magic of the sea through the eyes of fine-art photographers, who -- like many of us -- live, work, play, and often obtain their inspirations from the water," states exhibition curator, Michael Gross. "Emerging from the foam and developing into a society, the profound relationship between man and the sea that was once confined to food and commerce has become spiritual, recreational, and commercial." By the Sea showcases the photography of Joel Meyerowitz, Lee Peterson and a collection on loan from the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts that explores life by the sea. The exhibition will be on view through June 1, 2003. Joel Meyerowitz' internationally famous color images capture the unique beauty of that point where the sea meets the sky. Norman Mailer describes Meyerowitz' work as "an ongoing quest for the instant when nature can reveal itself through mood, light, mist, or the endless vortices of water in its dialogue with sand." Lee Peterson explores life, light, and ingenious abstractions beneath the surface rarely photographed in black and white. As Lee sees it, "The textures and shapes are plentiful and the contrast and range of light can't be found on dry land." The Museum of Photographic Arts has provided images from their permanent collection. "From Coney Island to Muscle Beach, from Atlantic City to Santa Monica, this group reflects the work of photographers from both coasts (focusing on San Diego)," says Gross, "all of whom include the particular attitude and lifestyle of those of us who prefer --no, need -- to be at water's edge." | | | Damsels, photograph by Lee Peterson | Corinactus, photograph by Lee Peterson | | Coming Events | | April 23 - June 1 | By The Sea The magic of the sea through the eyes of fine-art photographers Preview Reception Saturday, April 12, 5-7 PM | | May 11 | OMA Sunday Concert Aiyun Huang -- Marimba-Percussion at the museum -- 4:00 PM Docent Tour 3:00 PM | | July 7-11 9:30 -11:30 AM | Summer Kids Art & Nature Camp Camp Ruddy Duck, ages 5-6, $55 Registrations being taken now, 760-721-2787 | | July 7-11 12:30 - 2:30 PM | Summer Kids Art & Nature Camp Camp Blackbird, ages 9-12, $60 Registrations being taken now, 760-721-2787 | | July 14-18 9:00 AM - Noon | Summer Kids Art & Nature Camp Camp Crawdad, ages 7-8, $65 Registrations being taken now, 760-721-2787 | CHANGES ON THE OMA BOARD The OMA Board of Trustees expressed its gratitude recently to Don Gaudio who has completed a two year tenure on the board following many years of board membership beginning with the founding of the museum. Former OMA president Jean Burns is returning to the board after a two year hiatus. Jean is OMA's concert coordinator, an opera enthusiast, and an active grandmother. She continues to fulfill a long-time ambition of walking the beaches along the Pacific coast and has reached Eureka having started at the Mexico border. Doug Mayberry is a first time board member, influenced by his late wife Eleanor's art history background and her love of art. Also known as "Dear Doug" he writes a nationally syndicated column for seniors, an endeavor he developed after 35 years of marketing syndication with the LA Times and now with the Copley News Service. He is an avid gardener of succulents and a pretty funny guy. Beatte Russe is excited to be on the board because she feels that OMA is a necessary addition to the cultural life of North County. She is impressed by the commitment and dedication of the board to the museum's programming. After a 27 year nursing career in Berlin, Beatte is now involved with preventive healthcare and is a yoga instructor. She would like to introduce the museum to as many people in North County as possible. FROM THE DIRECTOR . . . During the phenomenal Quilt Visions 2002 exhibition we conducted a survey to determine where visitors to the museum reside so that we might be aware of who the museum serves and the impact of the institution on North County communities. With Billie Nunan's expert tabulation of the 568 responses we learned that 34% of our visitors are from North San Diego County, 21% come from other areas of the county, and a remarkable 45% come from outside the county. That means that 66% of our visitors are traveling from outside the economic region of North County. OMA is a powerful engine of cultural tourism (a marvelous industry that enhances the quality of life for area families), it is an attraction for businesses searching for a quality environment in which to locate, and OMA is a contributor to the economic stability and growth of the region. 2002 was a spectacular year in many ways. We welcomed a record 34,000 people to our exhibitions, events and educational programs and saw museum membership grow to include 1,087 families. The exhibition year presented five strong shows that further enhanced OMA's reputation for excellence and instituted the biennial appearance of Quilt Visions, an exhibition of international importance. Preview receptions continued to build a true sense of our cultural community as over 500 people gathered to celebrate the Quilt Visions exhibition and 400 patrons attended the recent reception for Paintings from the E. Gene Crain Collection. The OMA-School of Art curriculum was expanded to include 15 classes. Our travel program launched two very successful international tours: one to Cuba with a week spent in Havana, and one to Spain with stops in Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona. The museum's social calendar was distinguished by record numbers attending the annual Madri Gras Brunch, the Masked Ball and the wonderfully quirky Garlic Fest. Also in 2002, the museum selected the highly regarded modernist architect Frederick Fisher, to design its landmark expansion from 5,000 sq. ft. to 32,000 sq.ft. And, once again, the museum continued its record of ending each fiscal year in the black. -- Skip Pahl OMA SEEKING ARTISTS FOR THE JURIED REGIONAL EXHIBITION

The OMA-Artist Alliance is a level of museum membership for artists who wish to encourage art in our community by exhibiting at local venues and who wish to support the museum. Artist Alliance meetings are held on the first Friday of every month and provide an opportunity for members to share ideas, network with other artists and to discuss exhibition opportunities.
