| OMA Home > Newsletters > Spring 2002 SMILE Preview Reception, April 6th 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Exhibition runs through May 26th. Oceanside Museum of Art presents, SMILE, an exhibition that celebrates humor in art beginning April 6th and continuing through May 26, 2002. Curated by former National Lampoon art director, Michael C. Gross, SMILE includes the work of twenty-two distinguished contemporary artists that have one thing in common: they make you smile. Gross says, "This collection of drawings, paintings, prints and sculpture is designed to make you giggle, chortle, smirk and laugh, tapping one of the most meaningful emotions we have in these tough times, our sense of humor. Art is often described as important, insightful, inspirational and beautiful, but rarely amusing. So, as the saying goes, leave your troubles at the door and lighten up!"
There will be a screening of humorous short films including a film by world-famous, award-winning animator R.O. Blechman (perhaps best remembered for his talking stomach Alka Seltzer commercial in the 1960s) and the delightful film, Calder's Circus, in which the great personal charm of sculptor Alexander Calder exudes with his playfulness and his fascination with the circus. His tiny wire performers articulated to perform circus acts were a source of entertainment for the Parisian avant-garde of the 1920s. The date for the screening of the films will be announced. SUSAN McCARTHY BOOK SIGNING - SUNDAY, MAY 19th AT OMA Local author and OMA member Susan McCarthy has written her first novel published by Bantam. Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands is based on events in McCarthy's father's life which were sworn to secrecy until 1991. The story recounts events around a Ku Klux Klan rampage in central Florida that lasted nine-months in 1951 and 1952. Working with information obtained from a network of African-American maids employed in the homes of area Klansmen, McCarthy's father provided the FBI with details about Klan activity that threatened the community. Bombs were set off and people were killed. McCarthy's father's life was in jeapordy. Afterward, her parents decided to stay in the area and to stay silent about the events until everybody was gone, and said McCarthy, "...well, they're all dead now." When the records were unsealed, McCarthy's father sent her and her four brothers an eight-page letter with a newspaper clipping from the time. He suggested that she should write the story, she being the writer in the family. McCarthy has written a fictionalized drama that follows real-life events. Meet her when she signs copies of Lay That Trumpet in Our Hands on Sunday, May 19th at OMA at 2:00 p.m. | LA NUIT DES BEAUX ART - THE MASKED BALL | | SAVE THIS DATE: Saturday, July 27, 2002 LA NUIT DES BEAUX ART - THE MASKED BALL at the Oceanside Museum of Art and Civic Center Plaza Cocktails 5:30 p.m., Dinner 7:30 p.m. Open Bar Dancing $150 per person. | OMA Scrapbook: Mardi Gras Brunch Programs | School of Art | Calendar | Museum Store | Newsletters | Membership About OMA | News | Exhibits | Volunteer | Guest Book © 2005 Oceanside Museum of Art Contact Us |
