The exhibition continues through October 26, 2003. John Edward Svenson: California Sculptor is being supported in part by a grant from Stirling Enterprises. Exhibition curator Skip Pahl said, "John Svenson's sculpture clearly reveals his personal voice in sensitive stylizations that convey a mysterious spark of life - a hallmark of great realistic sculpture." Architectural sculpture has played a long and distinguished role in western culture. In the first half of the 20th century the Works Progress Administration advanced America's commitment to the concept that quality of life is enhanced by art and that it should be a part of public places. John Edward Svenson has created much of Southern California's public art. His work is seen in parks, hospitals, hotels, cities, malls, airports, schools, museums and churches. Many know his "Sun Dancer" bronze porpoise fountain at the Laguna Niguel Ritz-Carlton and "George Chaffey" at the Ontario International Airport. He sculpted five larger than life bronze busts for Claremont University and U.C.L.A., and has twice received the American Institute of Architecture Award for Excellence in Sculpture. Elected to the National Sculpture Society in 1965 and advanced to fellow in 1971, Svenson has received its coveted Gold Medal and twice received the American Institute of Architecture Award for Excellence in Sculpture. Svenson is also a member of the Society of Medalists and has struck many designs to commemorate historic events and characters. Notable examples include Northrup Corporation's Achievement in Space, Pitzer College's Twentieth Anniversary Medal, Pierce Life Insurance's California Beautiful Medal, the San Bernardino County Bicentennial Medal, and commemoratives for the California Wine Industry and the Alyeska Pipeline. Svenson was also commissioned to sculpt portrait medallions of the kings of Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Svenson's work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world. Selected exhibits have been at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; National Academy of Art, New York; Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles; Pasadena Art Museum; University of California, Riverside; and the Alaska State Museum. | Coming Events | | October 16 10 AM -- 12 PM | Meet Me at the Museum Members bring a friend for free Breakfast and docent tour | | October 23 10 AM -- 8 PM | Free Day with Extended Hours | | October 26 | OMA Lunch at the Outback Fund-raiser luncheon at Outback Steakhouse 2485 Vista Way, Oceanside Call the museum for reservations | | November 15 5 -- 7 PM | Preview Reception, OMA Regional 3 Selected fine art from the San Diego County Region | | November 15 5 -- 7 PM | Student Exhibition Reception Free, OMA-School of Art | | November 16 through January 4, 2004 | OMA Regional 3 Selected fine art from the San Diego County Region | | December 11 10 AM -- 12 PM | Meet Me at the Museum Members bring a friend for free, Breakfast and docent tour | What's Cooking in Membership The OMA Membership Committee is planning a cookbook for fun and to raise money for the museum. OMA members are invited to submit their favorite personally tested recipes to be included. Please submit three or four of your tested recipes as soon as possible. Simply drop them by or mail to the museum. One or more of your recipes will be included in "An Appetite for Art" with your name. Look forward to buying several copies of "An Appetite for Art" for your friends and family members. Members of the OMA-Artist Alliance held a meeting and Pot Luck dinner at the home of Ruth Platner, Director of the OMA-School of Art for the August meeting. The OMA-Artist Alliance is grateful to Ruth for opening her home to an invasion of artists and for sharing her art with us as well. This was a wonderful opportunity for about twenty-five members to meet, share information and enjoy some wonderful food. We had so many great comments about this meeting that we plan to have another Pot Luck soon. The guest speaker for the September meeting was Claire-Lise Matthey Anderegg who teaches "Exploring Your Creativity in Watermedia" at the OMA-School of Art. Claire-Lise gave a dynamic presentation and left many with the inspiration to get to their studios and create something new. Printmaker Kirsten Francis is the guest speaker for the meeting October 3rd at OMA-School of Art at 5:00 p.m. The ongoing Artist Alliance exhibition in the lobby of the Bank of America, corner of Mission Avenue and Ditmar Street, has become very popular with bank patrons and staff. Each month the Artist Alliance hosts a free reception for the artists in the bank lobby and invites the public to vote for their favorite works of art. Please join us for the next reception Tuesday, October 28th in the lobby of the bank. Light refreshments will be served and the artwork is for sale. OMA-Artist Alliance is a level of museum membership for artists who wish to encourage art in our community by exhibiting at local venues and who wish to support the museum. Meetings are held the first Friday of every month for members to share ideas, network with other artists and to discuss exhibition opportunities. OMA-Artist Alliance members have the benefit to be included in the Artist Alliance portfolio and slide registry available to the public to view during museum hours in the museum store. Artists can present a visual representation of their work along with their resume and exhibition history, bio and contact information. From the Director . . . This year's Masked Ball was a very proud moment for Oceanside Museum of Art. Co-chairs for the fabulous event, Sandra Chanis and Beate Rüsse, together with their hardworking committee, created an evening that many believe was the most elegant and fun-filled fund-raiser in North County's busy social calendar. It was truly a gourmet's delight. The setting, the exquisite decorations and the lively music made it an evening that will long be remembered. In fund-raising terms, Sandra and Beate created an event that surpassed previous records by a wide margin. Generous sponsors and a record number of guests provided OMA with a remarkable 15% of its operating budget this year! More than ever before, the museum's corps of 75 volunteers is its strength. OMA volunteers welcome visitors at the front desk. They prepare mailings, create and serve exquisite hors d'oeuvres for openings, lead docent tours of the exhibits for children and adults, and curate and install exhibitions. And, they produce the many social events that make OMA a great place to enjoy art and to stay in touch with North County's creative community. Simpson is involved with the Oceanside Museum of Art because she sees the merit of bringing art to the community of Oceanside and to Coastal North County. Having made a leadership gift to the museum's capital campaign she believes that OMA is a first rate regional museum and mentions her faith in Skip Pahl and his vision of the community as the foundation for her commitment to Oceanside Museum of Art. Margie believes that OMA is one of the entities that can provide the strong leadership that will encourage growth and make an important contribution to the quality of life in Coastal North County. A Fine Arts graduate of Northwestern University, Margie is retired and enjoys time with her family and her dogs. Always fascinated with architecture and design, she has spent the last 30 years on residential architecture and landscape projects. In addition to her strong belief in the importance of OMA, Margie is also dedicated to research into biological solutions to insect control through support of the Dietrick Institute for Applied Insect Ecology. The Dietrick Institute provides training and education about biological pest control as an alternative to the use of toxic chemicals in agriculture. Peggy Jacobs Peggy Jacobs has been the creative force behind OMA's exhibitions for over 6 years. She is chair of the Exhibitions Department and serves as the museum's exhibit designer. Peggy also coordinates the design and production of the exhibition invitations, brochures and catalogs. She has curated three popular exhibitions at OMA: the James Hubbell Retrospective, Tribes of XYR, and Paintings from the E. Gene Crain Collection. During the installation of each exhibition, Peggy is at the museum every day, overseeing the construction for the new design and supervising the installation crew. She is a member of OMA's Building Expansion Committee and also the Architect Selection Committee that chose Frederick Fisher as the architect for the expansion. And if she weren't already doing enough for OMA, she serves as co-chair with Sandra Kempter for OMA's first Fine Art Auction, the fall fund-raiser for 2004. When asked what prepared her for her role at OMA, Peggy replied that everything she has done in life has led up to being able to do this job. Skip Pahl says that Peggy has brought a high level of professionalism to the exhibits program and is responsible to a large degree for the museum's success.
