Quilt Visions 2002

Preview Reception, Saturday, November 2
5:00 - 7:00 PM

The Forest, Mi Sik Kim

Darwinian Squares, Dale Fleming

Quilt Visions 2002 comes to Oceanside Museum of Art beginning with a preview reception on Saturday evening, November 2nd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and continuing through January 5, 2003. The preview reception offers a great party atmosphere in the midst of stunning artwork with hors d'oeuvres prepared by OMA's own Culinary Arts Council. The preview reception is free for OMA members and $8 for non-members.

A biennial juried international exhibition, the forty-five art quilts on view represent entries from seven countries. Over 900 submissions were viewed to determine the final selections. The works reflect a wide spectrum of artistic expression from impressionistic to abstract.

Quilt Visions 2002 is a collaboration with Oceanside Museum of Art and Quilt San Diego, a non-profit organization established in 1985 to promote quilt making as an art form. OMA director, Skip Pahl notes that, "The San Diego region is home to a remarkable number of quilt makers, collectors and aficianados. We experienced a high level of interest in 1998 when OMA presented the Full Deck Art Quilts, curated at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibitions Service and with a subsequent exhibition that featured the work of the Manhattan Quilters Guild and the story quilts of Faith Ringgold. Quilt Visions 2002 is generating the same groundswell of enthusiasm.".

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

John Watts
This fall John Watts celebrates a big birthday and many years at OMA as a volunteer. John has been with OMA since the planning days and has been greeting visitors at the front desk faithfully on Tuesday afternoons since OMA's dedication in October 1997. He is always full of humor and good cheer and keeps us all on our toes. He and his lovely wife Mary Ellen also volunteer for all of OMA's preview receptions. John is a member of the Membership Committee and is a worthy competitor in OMA's membership contest. He has a persuasive and enthusiastic way of convincing many visitors that membership in OMA is the best deal in town, and it is!

ELEANOR MAYBERRY MEMORIAL

We have lost a dear friend with the passing of Eleanor Mayberry. Eleanor was a favorite of our museum family, much admired for her wisdom, poise and caring nature. A gracious lady who was not only a strong supporter of OMA and its programs, but a delighful docent. Eleanor was a knowledgeable art historian and educator who was a favorite docent with young students as well as adults.

OMA TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2003

AFRICA
Imagine yourself enjoying a safari on the plains of Africa surrounded by elephants, zebra, giraffes . . . or observing a pride of lions lolling on the banks of a sandy river. While you sip your cocktail, the fiery sun melts into the water, as it only can in Africa. These and countless other close-up wildlife experiences await you on your customized tour. Let us take you to the best places on Earth to encounter magnificent wildlife in its natural environment.

The African Conservancy is teaming with OMA to offer customized all-inclusive luxury safaris, visiting out of the way locations, where you will enjoy special access to people and places that other tours can't offer. The group size is limited to eight people, ensuring an intimate and personal experience. You will come home feeling privileged to have experienced the real Africa on your vacation of a lifetime. Please call the African Conservancy at 760-945-7571 for additional information.

BEST OF THE SOUTH
If you prefer traveling in the United States, the "Best of the South" is a seven night adventure that includes Jekyll Island, Savannah and Charleston. The tour will take us to the Kingsley Plantation at Fort George Island and Rockefeller's Indian Mound winter mansion on Jekyll Island, Drayton Hall-a National Historic Landmark plantation and the Palladian-style mansion in Charleston, and Middleton Place, the oldest formally landscaped gardens in America.

Excursions in each city feature sights made famous in movies such as "Forrest Gump" and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" in Savannah. There will also be a private tour of the Owens-Midnight House and Museum, one of the finest examples of Regency architecture in the United States. This is in addition to the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, the Beaufort Arsenal Museum and the Gibbs Museum of Art. A visit to The Acacia Collection provides a unique experience - unlike any museum in the world because each artifact was made and used by African Americans . . . and so there is an important craft as well as a lesson and artistry behind every piece of material art. A dinner cruise in Charleston will add to other planned activities and ample leisure time.

This trip will be departing April 6, returning April 13, 2003. For further tour information and reservations, please call STS Tours at 800-620-9995.

The above programs are just two of the trips planned for 2003. The OMA Travel Club welcomes your ideas for suggested itineraries. Please call the museum at 760-721-2787 for additional information.

Larry Hatter Kicks Off the Capital Campaign

Larry Hatter
Oceanside booster and local businessman Larry Hatter has been tapped to chair the Capital Campaign for OMA's expansion. A long-time civic leader, Hatter has a strong commitment to the cultural arts in Oceanside. Hatter says he is looking forward to taking the museum to the next level through teamwork with people who care about the future of the cultural arts in our community. He credits the visionaries whose diligence made the museum and he says that time and effort from other like- minded supporters will give the museum the prominence in North County that it has earned.

Larry Hatter brings to his new responsibility years of experience in "making things happen" in Oceanside. He has held leadership roles in the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, the Armed Forces YMCA, the United Way, the Oceanside Friends of the Library, the Oceanside Educational Foundation, the Board of Mission San Luis Rey, the Economic Development Commission, the North Coast United Methodist Church and he has spearheaded twelve different political campaigns, some involving people, some involving issues.

Perhaps Hatter's greatest achievement was to champion Oceanside's 2000 School Bond which was the first to be passed in San Diego County for many years. Today Oceanside is celebrating the construction of a new science and technology center at Oceanside High as well as many other long needed capital improvements throughout the district's schools.

He is definitely a man who can get things done.
