New Work
from Allied Craftsmen
June 18 - August 6, 2006
The debate over whether the designs
of master craftsmen should be considered works of art may never
end. It has sometimes been a bitter feud that has no real
winners. The history of Allied Craftsmen of San Diego mirrors this
international discourse between opposing camps of artistic interpretation.
Since its inception in the 1940s, members of Allied Craftsmen (then called the Allied Artists) have forged a proud history of concept-altering techniques and innovative designs. Allied Craftsmen artists have garnered national and international acclaim for designs in a variety of media incorporated into traditional and non-traditional forms. Through a golden era of exhibitions from 1952-1980, and subsequent detractors from local art museums, Allied Craftsmen continued to enjoy an enthusiastic following and remained preeminent in the area of outstanding craftsmanship and unparalleled design.
Oceanside Museum of Art is proud to present this invitational exhibition of 16 enormously gifted artists in SAN DIEGO DESIGN: New Work from Allied Craftsmen. Wood, clay, fiber and metal are brought to a level of artistic excellence that mutes the oft-touted arguments about the place of fine craft in the art world and challenges the viewer’s mind, spirit and senses, as is the duty and the definition of all art.
