Surf's Up at Oceanside Museum of Art

Oceanside Museum of Art celebrates surfing beginning with, The 70s: Surf Photography by Jeff Divine and Classic Boards from the Era, the exhibition that kicks off a series of events with a preview reception on Saturday, June 30th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the museum. Surf photographer, Jeff Divine will be on hand to greet guests, and the party atmosphere the museum is known for will be underway. Admission is $8 or complimentary for members of the Oceanside Museum of Art. Wine and soft drinks will be served along with hors díoeuvres prepared by the museumís own Culinary Arts Council. The exhibition runs through September 2, 2007.

Jeff Divine grew up in La Jolla and began taking photographs of his friends surfing in the mid-1960s while in high school. Within a few years his photographs were being published in Surfer magazine, and in 1971 he was hired as staff photographer at Surfer. During the 70s, Divine lived in Hawaii and traveled throughout the world, capturing the decade on film. This exhibition features a selection of these early images and focuses on the surf culture in Southern California and Hawaii. A display of vintage surfboards from Southern California collections will accompany Divineís photographs.

Divineís 30 year career is the subject of the book, "Surfing Photographs from the Seventies Taken by Jeff Divine." The museum will present "An Evening with Jeff Divine" on Thursday, July 19th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Divine will take guests on a tour through the photographic galleries and talk about his years following the circuit to capture the photos that define an era. Admission to "An Evening with Jeff Divine" is $5. Admission is free for members of Oceanside Museum of Art.

Adding to the museumís summertime surf theme is the music of the period featuring a concert with the world famous, Surf Kings. Known for their strong guitar riffs and hard-driving rhythm section, The Surf Kings will be performing at the museum on August 9th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A beer and pizza reception will begin the evening in the exhibition galleries. Admission is $15 or $10 for members of Oceanside Museum of Art. Seating is on a first come basis. There are no reservations.

Rounding out the surf programs is "Surf Film Night" on Saturday, August 18th in partnership with the California Surf Museum. Meet at OMA at 6:30 to view the exhibition. The film will begin at 7:00 in the Community Rooms of the Oceanside Civic Center Library. Admission for ìSurf Film Nightî is $5. Admission is free for members of the California Surf Museum and Oceanside Museum of Art. Please present your membership card at the door. There are no reservations for this event.

MEDAL OF DISTINCTION HONOREES
A highlight of The Museum Ball is the presentation of the ”Medal of Distinction” which honors members of the museum and the community who have made a significant contribution to the success of the museum. This year’s honorees are Jean Burns, and John and Mary Steiger.

Jean Burns became involved with the Oceanside Museum of Art because she wanted to see cultural arts come to Oceanside. She responded to an article in the newspaper and signed up for what was needed most: fundraising. She joined the Board of the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation becoming the first president of the museum after the renovation was completed. Jean feels her greatest sense of satisfacation with OMA comes from seeing what the museum is today after starting as a grass-roots organization with no real funding. When asked what she enjoys most about her role with the museum, Jean said "working with a group of people having a positve goal and working toward that goal, kind of like a barn raising."
Not everyone knows that Jean has another goal- to walk all the beaches from Mexico to Canada, a project she's been at for 16 years. Recently she arrived at the Columbia River. When not walking along the western coast, Jean enjoys family gatherings with her four children, boogie boarding with her eight grandchildren, and the opera and theater with her college sweetheart of 53 years, the talented Phil Burns of the Phil Burns Trio.

John and Mary Steiger have witnessed many changes in Oceanside over the years, one of the most dramatic is across the street from the Steiger Real Estate building on Pier View Way. John was present when city leaders proposed a cultural arts center in the historic Gill building and the Steigers have been involved in the development of the Oceanside Museum of Art ever since. Active in community, cultural and charitable projects for all of their married life, John has served as city councilman, president of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, board member of the Historic Mission San Luis Rey Foundation, and is the current president of the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation. Mary was the first woman president of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, has served on the board of Mission San Luis Rey and is currently on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Oceanside. She was chair of the Cityís Beautification Commission spearheading the campaign to landscape the cityís entryways.

Married 54 years, the Steigers enjoy time with their three children and six granchildren who joined them on a memorable 50th anniversary cruise to Alaska.

WHAT'S NEW AT OMA

OMA Book Club

Sparked by the recent book signing with award-winning author, Gayle Brandeis, OMA announced the new OMA Book Club chaired by OMA docent and bibliophile Arlene Brandeis. The book club will meet at the museum on the first Saturday of most months beginning on July 7th at 11:00 a.m. The Book Clubís first selection is Self Storage, the novel introduced at the book signing by author Gayle Brandeis with a short reading from the book. Gayle revealed to the audience how the book developed in her mind and how it assumed shape based on some events in her own life.

OMA is fortunate to benefit from this winning mother/daughter combination. As is fitting with the museumís mission to focus on the art of the San Diego region, the Book Club will also focus on fiction from the greater San Diego region.

Katrina Sjoberg
OMA Development Director

OMA has a new full-time Director of Development whom you may recognize as one of OMAís own regular docents. Katrina has the challenging role of bringing financial support to the museum in the form of grants and through the annual campaign. She will work closely with the museumís membership department and has already developed contacts with several foundations in the course of her research.

A multi-media artist and writer, Katrinaís experience in developing fundraising streams for private businesses will certainly by an asset for the museum. She is a native of Finland and has lived and traveled in many countries. Please take the opportunity to introduce yourself.

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

In May of 1999 OMA completed its first 10-year Long Range Plan. This document defined the museum's mission, set goals for it programs, and laid the course for a marvelous expansion that is now taking place. Through the vision and commitment of a hardworking Board of Trustees, a legendary corps of volunteers, a generous community of donors, and a dedicated professional staff, we completed the plan two years ahead of schedule.

With a timely grant from the James Irvine Foundation, your museum is now completing its second long range plan. Led by the highly regarded non-profit consulting firm of NP Strategies, the board and staff have developed this plan based on analysis of broad ranging personal interviews, the institution's history, our changing external environment, and the characteristics of our target audiences. This plan lays out new program objectives, marketing and communications guidance, and financial and fund raising goals. It ends by establishing key milestones and a means of measuring success.

This is a living document that is intended to be modified as the museum and its audience changes and grows. We believe it will lead OMA into another tremendous 10 years as it takes its place as a major landmark on the cultural landscape of Southern California.

Executive Director
