Tattoo Runway Show

Special Thanks
Chris Winn, Owner La Jolla Tattoo, Jade Winn, Master of Ceremonies

Special thanks go to Chris and Jade Winn for producing a breathtaking live exhibit of stunning tattoo artistry. Some of the tattooed clients who participated in the runway show traveled from as far away as the east coast to appear in this first ever event at OMA. The designs represented several genres of tattoos created by expert tattoo artists. The museum’s after-party gave guests, artists and clients a chance to mingle, admire and share experiences.

NEW STAFF AT OMA

Two familiar faces joined the museum staff on June 1st with the addition of Danielle Susalla, Assistant Director and Teri Sowell, Director of Exhibitions and Collections.

Danielle was an intern with the museum before earning a Masters in Fine Art in exhibition design from California State University, Fullerton. She comes to OMA after a stint as Interim Gallery Director at CSU Fullerton, and eight years as an art consultant for a fine art gallery in La jolla. She replaces Beth Smith, who is now OMA’s Director of Development.

Teri Sowell spent many hours at OMA in 2000 as the curator of the exhibition, Worn With Pride: Celebrating Samoan Artistic Heritage. She holds a Doctorate in Art History from Indiana University and has authored numerous publications and lectured widely at universities throughout the United States. Before joining OMA she was a lecturer at UCSD and SDSU.

FROM THE DIRECTOR:

It is an exciting time for Oceanside Museum of Art just a few months after the grand opening of the new Frederick Fisher designed Central Pavilion. The inaugural exhibition, Masterpieces of San Diego Painting: Fifty Works from Fifty Years, 1900-1950, drew record attendance and national publicity. The OMA docents were busy providing guided educational tours for all ages and the museum’s new cell-phone guided audio tour proved popular with many visitors. Documentary photographer Chris Rainier’s elegant black and white photographs in the exhibit, Ancient Marks: The Sacred Origins of Tattoos and Body Marking, inspired OMA’s live tattoo runway show, Masterworks of Body Art, that featured the live canvases of some of the best tattoo artists in San Diego County. It was an amazing event and surpassed our expectations thanks to tattoo artist and guest curator Chris Winn. We had two sell-out jazz concerts sponsored by Vigilucci’s Restaurant Group and a great “dinner and a movie night” with the film “Big Night” and Lotsa Pasta’s tasty dish Timpano.

Looking ahead, The Museum Star Ball, July 26th, is shaping up to be another night to remember with all of the festivities held on the museum’s new Biogen Idec Terrace for the first time. This annual black tie fundraiser is one of the best parties in town. And another Culinary Cinema Series presents the film, “Eat, Drink, Man, Woman” followed by a Chinese feast served in the museum lobby.

If you’re not a member of the museum, now is the time to join. With a calendar full of events, you won’t want to miss the activities - all to benefit the museum. Please help us continue our valuable cultural programming by mailing the membership application on page 7. Thank you in advance for your support.
