Oceanside
Museum of Art Reaches Capital Campaign Goal,
Launches Endowment Campaign
In just a few
short years Oceanside Museum of Art has reached its capital campaign
goal of $5.35 million for an expansion that will see the museum
grow from 5,000 sq ft to 32,000 sq ft. Construction is well underway
on Phase One, the Frederick Fisher designed building that will house
two galleries, an elegant lobby, a conference room and library,
exhibition preparation facilities, catering kitchen, and expanded
museum store and offices. Fisher is the ideal architect for the
new building because his clean, contemporary Modernist design is
a winning complement to Irving Gill’s 1934 early Modernist
design for the Oceansisde city hall which is the original OMA building.
When the entire expansion project is complete it will also include
Phase Two, the renovation of Fire Station #1 designed by Gill in
1929. Phase Two will be home to the OMA Auditorium, the OMA School
of Art now located 2 blocks away, administrative offices and a School
of Art/Museum Outreach Program gallery.
Now in its twelfth year, Oceanside Museum of Art has become a cultural
landmark for the region offering a place for friends to gather,
socialize, and reflect - a haven for spiritual refreshment so necessary
to the well-being of the families and visitors it serves. As the
museum’s next decade unfolds it is essential that funds be
available to sustain continued growth and outreach to the North
County communities. OMA’s respected exhibitions and cultural
programming have earned it a reputation admired by other museums
in the region. With the grand opening in sight for Phase One of
the expansion, now is the time for Oceanside Museum of Art to launch
its Endowment Campaign. The OMA Board of Trustees has chosen a strong
leader in the investment industry to spearhead the campaign and
Irv Simpson has agreed to take the helm as the Endowment Campaign
chair. Contributions to the campaign can be made in any dollar amount
and sent to the museum to Irv’s attention.

FROM
THE DIRECTOR:
Did you know . . .
You can now use money from your IRA to make charitable
gifts? Donors over the age of 701/2 are now permitted
to make gifts of up to $100,000 directly from a traditional
IRA to charity without having to include the gift
amount in their taxable income. While these gifts
do not qualify for a charitable income tax deduction,
the amount rolled over will satisfy your minimum required
distribution for the year of the gift.
Funds must be transferred directly from the IRA to
the charity, 401 (k)s and other plans don’t
qualify. In addition, the gift must be outright. Rollovers
to gift annuities and charitable trusts or to donor
advised funds and supporting organizations do not
qualify for this special tax treatment. Because the
funds must be transferred directly from the IRA, you
need to contact your plan administrator for specifics
on how to complete a gift from your specific plan.
These options should be especially beneficial to donors
who make mandatory withdrawals but don’t need
the income. A rollover directly to charity reduces
reportable income. For donors who take the standard
deduction, the gift satisfies the minimum required
distribution, reducing reportable income, and perhaps,
reducing taxes.
I look forward to talking with you further about making
a gift from your IRA.
