FROM PAGE TO SCREEN
Character and Creature Designs of Neville Page

Science fiction movies rely on artists to bridge the gap between fantasy and reality. Neville Page brings to life monsters that decimate New York City and aliens who wage battle with humanity. From Page to Screen displays the original designs from Star Trek (2009), Cloverfield, and Piranha 3D (which will be released in August), among others, showcasing Page’s use of traditional media as well as digital tools such as Photoshop and Zbrush to create fantastic creatures and exotic characters. The exhibition features Page’s design progressions, from early pencil sketches, to more developed digital concepts and small 3D models. Neville Page is one of the most recognizable artists in the entertainment industry and his iconic designs are known worldwide. From Page to Screen will be on view in the OMA Groves Gallery July 18 through August 15, 2010.

July 19-30
APTERA MOTORS 2e ENERGY EFFICIENT VEHICLE ON VIEW IN THE OMA LOBBY

See the vehicle that made a cameo in 2009 Star Trek. Now a production automobile, the 100 mpg Aptera 2e will be on view at OMA in conjunction with the exhibition From Page to Screen: Character and Creature Design of Neville Page. With the 2e, the driver will experience a comfortable and reliable ride while achieving more than 100 miles on a single full charge, equating to an equivalent of well over 200 miles per gallon. This previously unheard of level of efficiency is delivered by the Aptera 2e's aerodynamically designed, lightweight composite body that is so strong it can withstand a blow from a 5lb sledge hammer without so much as a dent. The body's strength is augmented by a collection of traditional safety features like 3 point pre-tensioning seat belts, dual front and side airbags, front and rear crumple zones and side impact door beams. An estimated annual charging cost of less than 1/3 the energy cost per year of a standard vehicle makes the Aptera 2e quite possibly the most energy efficient production vehicle.

July 24

Oceanside Museum of Art presents the Medal of Distinction each year at the Museum Ball in honor of members of the museum and the community who have made a significant contribution to the success of the museum. This year’s honorees are Irv and Valya Simpson and Ann Mortland.

OMA has been like a home for Irv and Valya over the years. They are honored to live in a community with such a vital and dynamic institution, where they can be involved with great people, great art, and engaging opportunities. Being both artists and art aficionados, Irv and Valya naturally came to be supporters of OMA. They have continued to give generously of their time and money and have procured sizable gifts for both the capital and endowment funds. Irv is a small businessman and artist and has served on the board for eight years, holding positions as Secretary and Treasurer. He is also a longstanding member of the Exhibitions committee, curator of two OMA Regional juried exhibits, and member of the Collections and Finance committees. As a fiber artist, Valya was exhibited at OMA in a well-received one-person show, “Cell Memory: Baba”. She consistently enhances museum events with her vibrant personality and beautiful, handmade, one-of-a-kind clothing. Together they are founding members of the Millennium Club.

Ann has been interested in the Museum from its beginning, and became active after her retirement in 1997. When the new Getty Center opened in 1998, Ann arranged seven bus trips that were among the first available through local organizations. Ann has been a dedicated member of the Special Events Committee for several years, serving as secretary from 2001 to this year, and chaired or co-chaired the Museum Ball four times. She also has organized numerous Mardi Gras brunches and other events, and continues to handle reservations and table arrangements. Now completing her fourth three-year term on the Board of Trustees, she is serving as Board Secretary. In 1998, she coordinated the Grand Opening celebrations for the new building. Ann and her husband Bruce are Millenium Club members and Gold Founders.
