OMA Home > Exhibits > Brighton Press: The Art of the Book

Exhibit dates: April 11 through June 20, 2004 The act of opening, reading and viewing a book is an act of engagement, a ritual involving touch, breath and deliberation. The artist books of Brighton Press in San Diego will be on view at Oceanside Museum of Art. Brighton Press has been creating books with a staff of artists, poets and craftspeople since 1985. The books are made by hand and are published in editions that range from ten to one hundred copies. Brighton Press books are sought after by art collectors, bibliophiles, and print collectors, and have also been acquired and exhibited by over seventy museums and libraries, including Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Getty Research Institute, the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Public Library.

From the book “LOESS”
One-of-a-kind mixed media collaboration between artists Michele Burgess, Bill Kelly and James Renner, with poet Jane Tass. Collection of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, La Jolla, CA

Brighton Press is actively involved in the life of a book, giving the artist exclusive use of the Brighton Press studio during the development of the book. Intaglio, relief and letterpress printing are done on the premises. It is important to Brighton Press directors Bill Kelly and Michele Burgess that a poem can be read in a museum and that an original work of art will be discovered in a library.

“Drought”
Single page publication with poem by Sandra Alcosser, drypoint and collagraph by Michele Burgess

A Preview Reception will be held at the museum on Saturday, April 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. featuring the fabulous hors d’oeuvres of OMA’s Culinary Arts Council. Admission to the reception is $8.00 and is open to the public. Members of Oceanside Museum of Art are free.

“Mimages”
Nineteen poems, six photographs, twelve drypoints and one woodcut by Bill Kelly.

There will be special opportunities to hold and read selected books on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Brighton Press directors, Bill Kelly and Michele Burgess will give a Gallery Talk on Thursday evening May 6, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the Gallery Talk is free for OMA members and $5 for non-members.
